I’ve been asking GROK questions, and it’s answers are pretty helpful.

Maybe someone here can help a little more. So, I don’t have to spend another thousand or two.

I bought a computer in 2022 to create music with. It’s sat in the box till today. I shot a short movie and hoped to use DaVinci Resolve to edit it.

I had no problem downloading the application. I can’t open it because my GPU isn’t good enough.

My problem now is, GROK gave me two alternative GPUs I could buy NVIDIA GTX 1650 and RTX 3060. At that point, it didn’t know what computer I owned. They’re both cheap. BUT, my computer is a –

Dell Optiplex 9020 Small Form Factor Desktop with Intel Core i7-4770 Upto 3.9GHz, HD Graphics 4600 4K Support, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, DisplayPort, HDMI, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth – Windows 10 Pro (Renewed)

Grok now tells me, that my Dell might not be able to fit either GPUs.

Does anyone know what I can do without having to buy a whole new computer?

    THANK YOU!

    Hey Van,

Not sure that I would trust GROK or any AI on getting the inner workings of a PC right.

On initial look at your specifications, I would have thought that Davinci would open.
Though looking twice, your Intel i7 processor is from a generation of processors that are over 10-years old, which might be where the initial problem is.
Or you might have missed an “1” in front of the 4770?

Form factor is just that, it is small, and often purchased a specific purpose. Whether roll-out across a large office, or used for digital signage, but not the PC that you’ll want to use to add your own expansion cards. On the pictures that I could find of the internals of your Dell, there is no obvious place to plug in an extra card.

Good news, for now, is that there are smarter people than me around here, who might know more about squeezing graphics cards into a small form factor desktop PC.

But first, you should look again at the version of the Intel processor.

    Hope that this helps?

Thank you. I think I actually figured it out with grok and a bunch of youtube video help.

All my specifications are fine except the GPU. I bought a – ZOTAC GeForce GT 1030 2GB GDDR5 64-bit PCIe 3.0 DirectX 12 HDCP Ready Low Profile Video Card ZT-P10300A-10L

It raises the graphics to the proper specification, and it will fit in my small form PC. Years ago I bought a MAC and needed to upgrade the GPU, and it’s actually very simple. Hopefully, this is the only issue.

Thanks for the response, and hope you had a great Christmas or Hanukkah.

2GB VRAM is insufficient for Resolve to work properly, even for editing only. Aside from that, 1030 was quite weak even when it was new. You should aim for at least 4GB. The 255W PSU and small form factor are limiting you, so you have only two viable choices—GTX 1050Ti or GTX 1650. Gigabyte had both of them in a low-profile design with 4GB VRAM. 1650 is slightly more powerful but requires slightly more juice from the PSU.

Also, it might be a good idea to stick to Resolve 18 or earlier, your hardware is not powerful enough for R19. All versions are available from the Blackmagic website, you can try them in descending order until you find one with satisfying performance.

Thank you. That’s why it’s important for there to be a minimum requirement page on Da Vinci’s website. They have pretty pictures that say “minimum requirements for PC”, it doesn’t matter where you click, nothing happens. There’s nowhere on the site that gives that info.

The wrong one should be at my house on Saturday. It’ll take me a few minutes to plug it in and try it out. If it doesn’t work I’ll get one of the ones you mentioned.

    Thanks again. Happy New Year!

They actually have minimum requirements, if you know where to look 🙂

You can find them at the end of the ReadMe for each released version. Here’s the latest one, for example https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/readme/dc266500948b4cd1a990cf17a9e85771

Looks like 19.0.2 was the last version that supported 2 GB cards. Starting from 19.0.3 they require a minimum of 4 GB

    THANK YOU!

You said it yourself, “If you know where to look.”

Customer support answered my question today, with basically the same thing. Look at the updates.

I answered them pretty dang rudely. Because they deserve it.

Common sense: I want your software. Will it work on my computer? Why in the world would I go to support updates when I don’t have the software on my computer? What am I updating? Nothing. If you go to where you download the software, there’s no minimum requirements list there. That’s where it needs to be.

I might download 18 since 19 won’t work. But, I also might just try Premiere Pro. When the simpliest things elude a company, there’s bound to be other problems.

If I ever make another movie, I’m going to get another Mac and Final Cut. Final Cut ruled. My version is just too old for these high falootin cameras of today.

The GPU came. It was easy to install, and it worked.

Perhaps what you need the 4GB for is resolve for effects.

I’m just simple editing and eventually color correction. The correction is down the road. It’s going to be a long, slow road.

I did love the fact you can sync the sound and video in a flash. That was great.

If you try an earlier version you should be able to find one that works with your GPU.
    I did.
Resolve worked fine on one computer with a current GPU but not the other. I went back 2 versions and got it working fine.

Thanks. I’m fully up and running. Now, I just have to learn da vinci. I’ve edited the first scene, and it works a little like Final Cut. But, FC was very user friendly. I didn’t have to look up anything in order to edit. Da Vinci is not as user friendly. But, for free, I am sure not complaining (not much anyway).

    Have a HAPPY NEW YEAR!
