New 15″ Macbook Pro with FCPX 10.1, processor choices and speed questions…
Thinking of selling a mid-2011 27″iMac and a late 2009 Macbook Pro and moving up to the fully maxed MBPro 15″ w/external monitor. (Black Friday sale opportunity…) With the new FCPX release coming, can anyone shed some light on how well it will do with editing and rendering of (mostly) 5D & 7D 1080p footage speedwise? Flash storage HD factored in?
I’m an underwater freelance shooter and don’t do final grading, mostly rough edits, so if someone has brand or model recommendations for a low cost 32″ TV monitor (2 actually, for 2 locations) to use with the HDMI output, I would appreciate any advice.
Last, comparing the 13″ MBPro (dual core) to 15″ (quad core), both with fastest processor choices, will I see much of difference in real-world FCPX editing speed?

You will not have any problems with DSLR footage. You simply need to click on the optimise footage option during import, so the H.264 will be converted to AppleProRes. if you’re not doing grading or effects you don’t need to optimise, X handles H264 quite well up to a certain point but with ProRes you’ll have a very smooth experience.
I would recommend getting a maxed out MBpro. Quad Core i7, as much RAM as it can take and the fastest GPU offered.
I use an LG for my external monitoring at home, but any name brand should work.

The 13″ maxed out is of interest as well… (2.8GHz dual core, 16GHz Memory).
Apple store rep, (a good friend) was saying that for editing, both the 13″ and 15″ would feel very fast, but I’d notice faster ‘batch’ processing (rendering movies, etc) with the 15″ (2.6GHz quad core, 16GHz memory).
The monitor size is not of much concern where I’ll be using externals. Trying to quantify “speed differences” may be impossible, but I figured I’d ask, because if the 13 will feel very close to the 15 in speed, I’d go that route. Don’t want to regret it though… Thanks!

Only the top of the line MBPro 15″ has Nvidia graphics. The rest use Intel Iris. I’m not currently up on what the Iris is capable of, but my guess is that the Nvidia is going to be much better. And GPU performance is becoming more important as indicated by the new Mac Pro with 2 GPUs.
