Networking Nightmare
Slightly complicated one now (well, for me at least).
We are in an office with 3 macs, all have the latest version of snow leopard, all are on the same network. All macs are networked to see each others drives, as well as any standard external HDs that are attached.
We recently bought a Western Digital sharespace, 8TB. It is plugged into one of the macs via ethernet, and it is possible to connect to it on that mac via SMB. Firstly-01- How do I access it from the other macs?
02- How do I control the partitions and access permissions on it? At the moment it seems to be comprised of 3 volumes, and I want it to be just , which is readable and writable no matter who does it.Thanks in advance!

Hi Tom,
The ShareSpace should be plugged into your network itself, not a computer. Just plug the ethernet to your main router/switch and it should pop up in the network browser in Mac OS. From there, you should be able to log into it with the default login/pass, which should be admin/admin. To configure it, you’ll want to log in via Bonjour in Safari. It has its own little setup interface with all the options you need. It’s all pretty well planned out in the manual, which probably shipped on the included CD. Ah, right- sorry totally forgot to say- for various reasons plugging it into the router isnt a particularly great option- i did sorta already know that you’re supposed to plug it (or indeed any NAS) into a router 😀 Just wondering if there’s a way round this.
OK, to further the question into even more complicated realms: Our internet comes to us from a different room, though ethernet ports in the walls. We DO however have a spare router lying around which we used to use for our wireless network, but no longer need it. Is it possible to somehow pug in the Sharespace into the router and access it from all the macs, whilst still taking the internet from the original source? (So I dunno- almost like having 2 networks or something? One wireless for the Sharespace and one ethernet (which is already there) for the internet?)

If your computer are on the same network and you can share drives, the ethernet plugs in the wall necessarily go to a common router or switch somewhere. If you don’t have access to that, the easiest solution would be to get a dirt-cheap 4-port switch. You’d run an ethernet cable from the wall plug to the small switch and run cables from the switch to the computer that used that wall port and to the NAS. With a switch, the setup should be pretty plug and play. Your spare router may very well be capable of running simply as a switch without uplink. Check its documentation.
Your wireless solution would work, but would probably require more setup and you could be severely limiting transfer speed to the NAS through Wi-Fi. Even in the best of cases, performance would be quite a bit lower than with a wired switch.
