    Hello guys!

A strange question for you all…maybe you can help.

I have a macbook pro and I also have a g5, but unfortunately I live in a very very very very cramped (so called) apartment, and do not have room to set up both a desktop with big CRT monitor and my laptop.

So what I want to do is get rid of the CRT and somehow get the two to work together…

I have no idea about what is possible and what is not…but is it possible to set up the g5 with after effects and whatever running, and then to leave it running blind as I send files from my laptop to be rendered on it? Thus allowing me to work on other files while my desktop deals with the rendering.

Or maybe…set my laptop up temporarily as a monitor for the desktop comp…set up the files that need to be rendered, and then set the render off and restart my laptop as a laptop again and wait for the render finished BLING!!! to sound from my desktop?

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated…i know there must be a way to do it. and if you can maybe not reply with “why dont u just set up a monitor and work on your bed” or something similar…that would be great…believe me when I say my room is cramped…I mean it is really really cramped 🙂

    Thanks guy

To do this you need to install renderengine (same installdisc) on the big one
start it up and give it the direction where to look for a ‘watch-folder’
(could be the harddisc of your laptop, or its proper harddisc)
then when you have a project to render, set it up with the comp to be rendered in the renderqueue, then ‘collect-files’ with the ‘enable watch-folder’ – button pressed and collect it to the same place you’ve told the other machine to watch for watch-folders.
When it sees a collected files folder with something in the renderqueue, it will just start rendering.
One thing… you should have the used plugins, quicktime format plugins and fonts installed in both machines.

Connect the two machines via Gigabit ethernet using a hub or crossover cable. Then get yourself a copy of REMOTE DESKTOP from Apple. Using ARD 3 you can run the desktop from within a window on the laptop.
    -C

I edit video. I post sometimes.
I fix things. I eat marshmallows.
I play drums. I drink scotch.
    I like TV.

    Done typing now.

[Chris Clephane] “Then get yourself a copy of REMOTE DESKTOP from Apple. Using ARD 3 you can run the desktop from within a window on the laptop.”

    Also, Leopard has that feature built-in. It’s in the Sharing preference pane and it’s called ‘Screen Sharing.’ If you have either ARD or Leopard on both computers (mix and match) you can use this feature. It’s very similar to file sharing… only screen sharing (;
