It might help if you can look at the more detailed log file for the NR service on EDIT2. That usually gives more detail about why it failed.

You should not have to setup the file mappings or to add the EDIT2 rendered onto the EDIT2 NR setup.

However… you might just check that you can indeed access the file mappings from EDIT2.. although I suspect that is something that is probably working.

A common issue is related to the DNS suffix for the computers that is setup in the “My Computers” properties. Your problem may or may not be solved but just in case follow the instructions here

I wish you could edit posts…

You should not have to setup the file mappings or to add the EDIT1 renderer onto the EDIT2 NR setup.

Liam thank you for prompt reply.

On my first post I forgot to explain that I started the render services on PC 2 however forgot to start the render service on PC 1 instead I opened the project and selected render as and then selected Render Using Network Computers.

Could this have caused the failure on PC 2? not starting the render service on PC 1 or will vegas automatically start the service on the editing machine?

It sounded like it did run on PC1 right – as otherwise how did you setup the network shares and the link to the other render host (on PC2). In any case… i don’t think that’s where your issue is (very easy to rule this out anyway). It sounds like the PC2 NR got the job and it failed for some reason. The detailed log may very well tell you what went wrong. Have you looked at that? (I can’t remember where they are…. they may be in Documents and Settings\Application Data\Sony etc etc)

after you get NRS working i think you’ll find that using distribute NRS on 2 computers is slower then rendering on one computer because of the “stitching” time. NRS works very nice when you are editing a project on computer 1 and then you assign computer 2 to render a project/section while you continue to edit on computer 1, or you stck up rendering jobs to render over night or while you are out … i have found that even with 3 computers for most projects one computer is faster then the 3 .. when you hit 4 & above computers then you’ll find that it saves time using distribute rendering …

I would agree… in most cases this is true… NR really makes a lot of difference (even with just 2 clients) if you have a lot of FX’s on your timeline that significantly slow down the render. If what you have is a “cuts-only” type of project then NR is not the way to go.

    Guys thanks for your responses,

Yesterday I got the opportunity to do a few test, that being NRS and standalone rendering. The project that I put together had the following on the timeline:

The music i used was an upbeat song and added markers to every x4 beats. I then placed various shots from the footage I had and on that footage I added a Magic Bullet and Contrast and Brightness filter. The total length of this clip is about 2.5 minutes.

1st test: On my Standalone PC which is a Dual 2.0 ghz XEON x1 gig RAM & 200Gig HD this project took to render 02:39:10:00

The same project using the PC above and the second PC being a P4 2.4ghz, 500mb RAM & a 200gg HD only took 01:00:06:00 via the NRS.

Most of my projects are composed in the same fashion as the one above and seeing results like this excite me.

In my previous post I asked if anyone had experienced the glitch problem when using the NRS, If I can solve the glitches then I believe using the NRS in my situation will only benefit my turnaround time.

Glad it is working for you (apart from that odd “glitch”). I’ve used NR pretty extensively – and never encountered a glitch like you describe. However it sounds rather similar to the old “flash-frame” problem where occasionally you may find a frame from somewhere else in the project appears in the rendered avi file (for no apparent reason). Do a search on the Sony forum for “Flash Frame” and you may find some stuff that will help.

If you render without NR does that glitch happen?
