Net Render Problem: Different Version of Client and Server
Posted by Phoenix Studios on May 30, 2006 at 6:08 amI don’t get this. I installed clients on lan machines using the 9.0 CD. I was able to upgrade the clients to 9.102 using downloads from MAXON, but trying to upgrade the clients to 9.6 seems impossible. The current production machine is at 9.6 as is the net render server. Is there just a dll or something I can use to fix this? Or do I need to go back to 9.102 server? Or just give up, as that seems the easiest option at the moment:) Thanks!

May 30, 2006 at 6:20 amDo you have the client installed for the production system as well?
If yes simply copy the complete folder to each client.
If you need to upgrade a 9.1 installation to 9.6 you have to apply the 9.5 upgrade first and then the 9.6 update. Remember to install all modules before the final 9.6 update.

May 30, 2006 at 4:44 pmThe complete CINEMA Folder.
Different to most applications CINEMA places no files outside it’s own directory. Especialy with the net client all you need is this one folder at some place on the client systems disk. Your collegues don’t have to be alarmed, there are no hidden files or services added anywhere on their system, CINEMA is fully self contained.

June 1, 2006 at 1:41 amA couple things to check. I’m just guessing here, but 9.6 update may only work on 9.5 files. Also, I simply dragged a copy of the client/server .exe files into the latest version folder and reran the update and that worked for me. It does warn you upon installation that you must select the folder where the client/server files are stored. I simply copied them from a previous version folder. Hack perhaps, but did the trick.

June 4, 2006 at 4:05 pmThanks Bjorn, but that just flat out did not work as expected. The entire program starts after following that procedure! I even tried this:
1. install just net render client on coworkers pc, from v9 CD.
2. copy & replace only the files placed there by V9 from my V9.6 install.
3. click on net render client icon.
And the entire CD4 program starts! I noticed too that the executable in the V9.6 install called C4D Client.exe is exactally the same size and date of CINEMA 4D.exe, the program file. So maxon has changed something there, it seems. Very strange! So now what to do?

June 4, 2006 at 4:10 pmDear nsomnius, thanks for that but I really don’t understand what you are trying to say. See my latest post back to Bjorn on what I did, that also does not work. How do you know which are the client files/folders? Thanks…jigs

June 4, 2006 at 6:06 pmYour not after the files/folders, just the exe’s. My comment was to heed the 9.6 update instructions by verifying that the client/server (exe’s) are actually in the folder where the update is applied. I missed that on the first run. Moved the exes into the proper path (9.5 files) and reran the update. Bingo.

June 4, 2006 at 9:42 pmThe same size of the executables is correct. In fact they are identical except for the name.
CINEMA detects under what name it was started and will start up as Server or Client if named accordingly.
I only heard of this happening before on an OS X installation that somehow did not start the application with the correct name. Does this happen with the normal version and the UB? The UB version uses the OS X package system which is a bit more complex and relies on the correct information beeing set in the invisible app folder.

June 5, 2006 at 12:55 amMy 9.6 install works great on production manchine (program, server, client). I am just trying to get the net client to work on other machines. I used the installer from the CD, v9.012 on coworkers machines and installed just the net render client. I am assuming this is how it works, the server is running somewhere, anywhere, and passes jobs to networked clients. Then, the networked clients do the work.
In this case the server is running on the production machine. The networked clients report “Different version of client and server” because they are still at the v9.012 level.
The updaters that I have for both 9.5 and 9.6 don’t give the option to install just the net render client like the installer on the CD does. These were downloaded from the maxon website. Arg,,,
