Nesting – tips for trimming?
I find myself often nesting clips, then needing to take the new (nested clip) sequence to the end of the timeline, opening it up, moving the nested clips down in it’s timeline, and adding extra frames to the head and tail, going back to the main timeline, trimming away the newly created frames, and dropping it back in place. ALL THIS just to create the extra frames needed for transitions.
Am I missing an easy shortcut to all this tap dancing? (And let’s assume we’re working with an established main timeline that you don’t want to be slipping all over creation.) -

I usually edit them fat at either end of the clip so I can trim the nest back to account for the transitions…

Or try dragging the nested clip UP to a NEW track, then stepping in and editing. You won’t affect your other tracks this way when it automatically gets longer.
I’ve also had luck opening the nested timeline, then going back and locking the main timeline track(s). Then editing the nested timeline. But I think that new versions of FCP lock you out of that now.

Upstairs… that’s a bit easier than going to the edge of the world. To me, it would seem more logical if the nested clip retained it’s original in/out/duration, regardless of internal editing. A heriarchial edit dominance, if you will.

Unfortunately nests use the same “rules” as subclips… this is a feature waiting to happen… might give some feedback to Apple about it.

Good suggestion Jerry, but I beat you to the punch (this time) – already posted feedback with them. Do I remember a survey some time ago about desired improvements for FCP… where you rated a list of potential features? Time for that to resurface. 😉
