  • nesting in sequences, shouldn’t it update if I make a change in original?

I am a bit confused with nesting sequences, and I have just started to use this tool. I read about it in the manual and it seems to be that if I nest a sequence in a new sequence, when I make a change to the original sequence, it should update in the nested sequence, or so it says it will. Not sure what I am doing wrong. I nest the sequence in a master timeline, and when I make a change to the original, nothing happens in the nested sequence. Another question for anyone who is hip to this, in the past when I export with compressor, I export the sequence as a FCP/QT movie, bring it back in to FCP and export with Compressor. Is this too much? Can I just export the nested sequences with compressor as is? thanks and sorry for the long winded post, couldnt find anything in the archives on nesting.

You say you’re nesting a sequence. Could you say exactly how you’re doing this? What are you doing to make the nest? There are instances in the functionality you expect does not occur. Also could you describe what it you’re changing in the sequence that you expect to see in the parent or master sequence. What version of FCP is this exactly?

I don’t know why you’re bringing your exported sequence back into FCP. You could take it straight into Compressor.

    All the best,

thanks for the comment. I am using FCP 5.1.1, and what I am doing is dragging the sequence from my browser into a new project timeline. Then, say I extend a clip in the original sequence, in the other project, I was thinking that I would see the changes in the new project as well. Also, I am using my compressed FCP file directly with compressor, so I guess my question is, do I need to compress it once before I compress it with compressor, or can I just use compressor directly from the cut up timeline. sorry for any confusion, hopefully this makes more sense.
    thanks

the problem (or part of it) is that you are working between 2 projects.
stay within the one project, and it *might* work.

tom knows more than i do about the particular quirks of nesting, and what you have to do to make this work.
but i know it wont work between projects

what NickM says is true…it might just work if you’re not dragging it into another project.

I’ve had experienced the same problem that Zeech had, i’m using FCP 5.0.4 and it’s only on one project…

during that time, my collegue sorta nested…from the whole master sequence, then he added some supers and nested it and then slap on some stuff and further nested it…and in the last nested sequence, I did changes on the master sequence and in the last nest, it never updated a single pixel. :/

I had to refresh every single nest that i gave up, i painfully used the un-nested sequence instead.

    and

Zeech, you can just directly use compressor from FCP. set the In/Out point or better yet, (this is what i do) which is I create a new sequence just for exporting in compressor. So i could batch render it..the file names are long…if you have the time, rename it. it might be wise to do that…but, i couldnt be bothered. 😉

    Good luck.
