    Hello,
I am trying to figure out how to nest effects in FCP much like you would use Avid’s step in and out feature. For example if you made a picture in picture effect and you liked the shape of it you could save it off and use it elsewhere, then use the resize function to move it around within the picture in picture effect. I’ve tried to do this in a few ways in FCP but haven’t quite figured it out yet…any help would be greatly appreciated!
    TIA

Well, that’s not really NESTING the effect. First off, they way Avid deals with plugin effects and they way FCP does is VERY different, so you should completely forget how Avid does things and learn how FCP does. If you double click on the clip in the timeline, it loads it into the VIEWER, and then click on the FILTERS tab and you can see all the filters listed, in order. If you want to save one, drag it from there to a bin in the browser, it will save it and the settings.

Thanks for the reply! I do have that part of the process down, I’m more trying to figure out how to achieve something like the step in/out in Avid within FCP…In Avid I can put a p in p effect on a clip, step into it, put a resize on it and move the clip around or resize it WITHIN the p in p effect and not change the p in p at all, the shape remains the same but what is inside it can be altered, if this makes any sense! Is there a way to do this in FCP? thanks for your help!!

The only thing I can think of is creating the effect and saving it as a motion favorite.

Yeah, I know how you do this in an Avid…used it for 10 years. FCP won’t do this.

SO you are talking putting a PnP, then resizing the PnP so that it basically zooms into the video clip, but keeps the same PnP dimensions? Good question. The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is to resize and crop, because I haven’t done this before. Surely someone will have a better answer.

Exactly, that’s what I’m trying to do. I’ve been getting around it via cropping and moving the clip in the motion tab which is no big deal, just the Avid way is less steps so I wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing anything. I’ve been on Avid for 13 years, FCP for 3 but there are still things I’m trying to figure out. I’ve tried making the motion favorite, but that doesn’t allow me to resize within that effect.
    Thanks for trying guys!

There is several ways to do this. One is to create a white color solid, place it on the track below the pip fill, crop it to the size of your pip. Then modify the composite mode of the pip fill to travel matte – luma.
Resize to your favored zoom level.

Hi. There’s a $20 plug-in available through Digital Heaven that might make life easier for you. I haven’t used it but it was specifically created for this type of scenario. Here’s a link, you can watch a demo first and download a trial. I’ve used a few of their plug-ins. A good company.

Holy bejeezus I don’t know why the gurus don’t know the answer to this simple question. Especially when you already answered it yourself.

Nest the clip. Apply the pnp effect to the nest. Double click it to scale the clip inside to your hearts delight. Almost exactly like avid.

If you discover you want to do this after the fact, then copy the clip, remove the attributes, nest it, then paste attributes back.

FCPs methodology I’d more akin to AE than avid. If you’re an AE user FCP should be very familiar.

I’ll be damned. I’m not sure how I avoided doing things in the order you described but somehow that escaped me. Perhaps not enough coffee this morning? As for everyone else I”m sure it was the way I was describing the problem…not as simplified as I could have been I guess. But….thanks!
EDIT: although if you had to do it a lot it would make a lot of extra nests in the project…which is where the DH plug in might come in handy. You have to make a new “nest” every time, right?
