  • Nested Comp – how to copy and modify easily?

Hi, Hope someone can help me or at least point me in the right direction! Am trying to learn After Effects…and am working through a training series…but I now have a question that the training hasn’t mentioned so far…

Am a Premiere Pro user and have created a nice title effect using the preset “Raining Letters” Animation in AE which I hope to use in Premiere….

    Problem:
I also want to add scaling ‘in’ and motion blur ‘out’ to the effect. When I do this on the original text layer the scaling feature actually destroys aspects of the look of the “Raining Text” Effect. So…

Solution 1: (Which creates a second problem!)

Create a Nested Comp with the text effect comp and then scale and motion blur this second comp. This works fine now…but….

Problem 2: How to duplicate and modify text easily?

The effect now looks great…but I want many more versions for other titles.

I can’t figure out how to easily duplicate in a way that allows me to change the writing because I’m dealing with 2 comps not just one!

If I duplicate the original text effect…it of course modifies the nested comp version…

If I duplicate the nested comp…it still points back to the original text effect…

The only solution I can think of is either simply keep resaving the whole After Effect Project but with a different name each time…

..or importing the original effect and do the scaling in and motion blurring out in Premiere itself..

But I figured After Effects must have an easy method too…

Even if you can’t explain the whole process can someone give me a clue on what feature of AE I need to learn about..ie is this something to do with “Parenting?”

Thanks for any help…or even just a clue!!

Thought I had the answer…only to also fail!!

I moved both original text effect and nested comp into a folder…then duplicated the folder….

but the nested comp still points to the original comp!!

I am sure this is so simple for an experienced user…but oh so frustrating when one is stumbling around in AE novicedom!!

Well I’ve just learned about adjustment layers…

This method does indeed allow me to blur the text…

but Opacity and scaling still will not work on the “Raining Letters” effect within the same layer….pity because it would have provided a wonderful way to apply the scaling effects across all clips…

which leaves me back with my nested comp problems…

have been working for several hours on this now..would greatly value a clue!

    Tried this

1.) Duplicate the Text effect Comp with the single text effect layer inside. Rename all these comps with the new words needed.
2.) Place all these comps into another “combined” comp.
3.) Apply Adjustment layer to “combined” comp…

unfortunately text will still not scale…

After Effects follows pretty closely behind brain surgery IMHO:)

hi … do you know how to replace footage by alt+dragging?

so you have 2 comps and 1 is nested in the other. Duplicate both comps. Open up the new top level comp, but it is still referencing the other original comp right? …

so select the comp in the timeline, then hold down alt and drag the comp that you want it to be from the project window to where it is in the timeline.

does that make sense? does that help?

    Thanks Michael that works great!

I new there would be a simple solution…but had no one to ask and just couldn’t figure it out!

Thanks for taking the time to reply…greatly appreciated!
