  • Nested audio – mismatch between sequences

    Hi,

I have a strange problem which I’d like to seek some advise. This is a FCP 5.1.4 system on a dualcore 3Ghz Mac Pro.

I have a nested sequence and the audio that is inside the nest is fine but when I go back to the main sequence, the audio is playing back from a different part of the sequence.

I did noticed that on the main sequence, there is a line at the top of the audio track (just above the name), going through almost half the sequence and in this section where the line appears, the audio is completely off. If I go into the nest, the audio is correct.

I have since copied and paste the clips inside the nest and then overwrite it on the main sequence and create a new nest.

I have read that if there is nest within a nest, it can cause things not to update at the main sequence level.

What is the best advise and things to watch out for if we do need to deal with nested. Basically this is a full length animation feature and we then to nest the different reels when it comes to compilation so as to make the sequence less complicated.

    Thanks,

    -chrispy

It sounds to me like you may have slipped out of sync the audio in the main timeline (where your nest is placed). This can happen just as you can slip out of sync the audio tracks on a regular track. This is also consistent with the fact that when you open up the nested sequence the audio is correct..

I would first investigate that. I’m assuming you would know if you accidentally slipped the audio out of sync at some point as there is usually a visual + or – indicator when that happens… but it definitely can happen. When you copied the tracks in the nest back to the original timeline and made a new nest, is the problem gone?

Yes the problem went away when I copied from within the nest, pasted over the main sequence and then made a new nest out of it.

I don’t think it is a off sync due to a slip edit function as there are no off sync indicator on both the audio and video tracks where there will be a number indicating the number of frames that is offset. I have a screenshot of this audio indicator which I will post it for you to see.

Also, I noticed a quirky behaviour with nested tracks and audio and I will start a new thread on this.

Sounds to me like your audio render files are off which happens a bunch in FCP but is easily fixable. Delete the AUDIO renders for both sequences, then render the main sequence audio, then renest and render the nested audio.

    Hi Jeremy,

What’s the easiest way to delete audio renders for a given sequence ?

Below is a screenshot of the timeline that has the line going halfway across the audio track on the STTD Reel1B 23.98fps sequence and if I play within that line area, the audio is completely off…in fact it is playing from somewhere further down that sequence but if I go into the nest itself, everything is fine.

Any idea what that line above the audio track means ?

It looks like a render bar to me. that happens when there’s filters or in this case, it’s probably mixing down all of your tracks and needs to render. It looks like it got half way through before it quit.

The easiest way to delete render files is to use the render manager in the Tools menu. Find your sequence, check the audio files option and click ok. (It’s easy to figure out, and I can’t remember exactly the proper names). Or you can easily just physically delete all the render files from your scratch disk.
