  • NeoScene = Media Encoder CineForm Export?

Posted by Nate Hanson on October 2, 2013 at 2:25 am

I used to use NeoScene to convert my Canon EOS video files before editing. NeoScene broke.

If I simply export my clips using Adobe Media Encoder and use the CineForm codec, am I getting everything that NeoScene used to do for me? Or am I missing something in that process?

Thanks in advance for any help!

it’s been some time since I used Neoscene…I can’t remember whjat all the settings were.

If you have concerns, I think the free version of CineForm Studio will convert those files as well…it’s available at the GoPro website.

    Thanks, Tim.

Just in case you are interested, I ran a comparison between the two options.

I dumped my recent wedding footage (Canon DSLR, 1080p 24fps) into AME CS6 and use the CineForm codec at “Higher HD”.
    Time: 1 hour, 26 minutes
Total file size: 49.4 GB (original h.264s were 30.8 GB)
My processor sat between 15% and 25% during transcode.

Then I used GoPro Studio (free) at it’s highest setting (“high”)
    Time: 43 minutes
Total file size: 45.7 GB (same originals, obviously)
My processor rarely dropped below 90% during transcode.

Why is GoPro using all of my processor, but AME is not? Who knows.

Yes. The free version of the codec doesn’t use all available cores when it runs inside another application (like AME). That’s the tradeoff for free…

GoPro Studio is definitely faster for converting files if you have the types of files it will load…for anybody working with XDcamHD or something like that, using GoPro Studio isn’t an option, so you go through AME and just understand it will take some time.
