So I picked up Neoscene last night and batch converted a bunch of MOV files to AVI. First off, the size difference is HUGE.

    File 1 = MOV = 208,000 kb
    File 1 = AVI = 2,445,156 kb

    And so on.

When I view them full screen on my HDMI 24″ monitor, I cannot tell the difference between them.

So, help me understand why I need to run these conversions? ( I do love batch converting though!) How is this going to help my use of Vegas and the quality of the work at the end product? I picked it up because I’m under the belief, like with FCP and Prores, that transcoding to an intermediate format is going to make it easier and smoother to edit with Vegas. But I cringe at the size of the files I’m now creating with this.

Thoughts? What am I missing here?

The conversion essentially takes the burden off your NLE to uncompress the MOV file while you’re editing, thus using less CPU. The AVI format will use less CPU cycles when in you NLE.
