    Hi,
    I use Sony Vegas 9.0e 64bit along with DVD Architect 5.0. My final output is to DVD. I do all my previews on an external monitor.
    I am fairly new to the Canon EOS 7d DSLR camera in which I use to take HD video. The camera video setting that I normally use is 1920 x 1080 24p (23.976). I use NeoScene Cineform to convert the .MOV files to AVI prior to using Vegas. Once I have the event on the Vegas timeline, I open the “Project Properties” window to make sure that settings are proper. I do this by clicking on the “Match Media Settings” folder on the far upper right side of the window.

    For clarity/quality reasons, I preview the event by;
    1) In the “Preview” window, I set the preview tab at “Best (Full)
    2) Loop a small portion of the event.
    3) Open the “Tools” tab and click on “Build Dynamic RAM Preview”
    4) Preview the event.

    Upon doing so, the event is very clean & clear. All is well to this point, the problem I’m having is with my rendering settings for DVD Architect. I followed John Rofranos Cineform templates the best I could due to using Vegas Pro 9.0e. P.S. John, if you’re reading this, A BIG THANKS as always! https://www.johnrofrano.com/tutorials/cineform_vegas_template.htm

    The following is how my “Custom” settings are set;

    I’m using Vegas Pro 9.0e, therefore the “Configure” window is different than Johns.

    My “Configure” window:

    As you can see, there are drop down arrows for other settings that are available within the Configure window. The following options are;
    Encoding Quality tab:
    Low HD
    Medium HD
    High HD
    Higher HD
    Filmscan 1
    Filmscan 2

    Video Format tab:
    Interlaced
    Progressive
    Automatic

    Pixel Aspect Ratio tab:
    Automatic
    Square Pixels (1.0)
    HD Anamorphic (1.33)
    DVCPRO HD (1.5)
    Anamorphic (2.0)
    SD NTSC 4:3 (0.9)
    SD NTSC 16:9 (1.2)
    SD PAL 4:3 (1.067)
    SD PAL 16:9 (1.422)

    Once rendered, I open DVD Architect. There are two problems upon playback.
    1) The event has very fast black flickers. It’s like a flicker between each frame. The event itself seems to be smooth. Although it’s hard to tell with all the flickering.
    2) Bad Clarity – The clarity in Vegas is at least 25% better than it is in DVD Architect.

    Obviously, something is not set properly. If anyone can help me with this prioblem, I would sincerely appreciate it. I’m stumped. Thanks for taking the time to read my problem, Ray

    Hi Ray, If your final output is to DVD you don’t want to render to the CineForm template (but thanks for the kind words anyway). That templates is best used when transferring files in CineForm format between programs like Vegas and After Effects.

    For creating DVD files, the easy way is to download and install the free VASST DVD Prep plug-in and have it do all the work of selecting templates and rendering your video and audio for you.

    The hard way (well… not that hard but manual) is go to File | Render As… and select MainConcept MPEG-2 with the DVD Architect NTSC Widescreen video stream template. Then render your audio as Dolby Digital AC-3 Pro using the Stereo DVD template. If you give both files the same name just with different extensions, then DVD Architect will know that the files go together. Finally just author your DVD in DVD Architect.

    Hi John,
    Thank you for your help. I downloaded the VASST DVD Prep plug-in as you stated. I went on to render a small event using the plug-in. Opened the event in DVD Architect for preview.
    1) Clarity is at least 40% less than in the Vegas timeline.
    2) All the horizontals are wiggling/jagged.

    In addition to using the plug-in, I rendered the long way as you described. The results were exactly the same as the plug-in. I then tried a couple other events and received the same results.
    On the flip side, I can now preveiw an AVI event on the Vegas timeline in the Best (Full) preview setting “without” having to use Dynamic RAM. The preview is totally clean and clear…..Awesome!!

    I don’t understand why the preview in DVD Architect is so degraded in comparison to the Vegas preview. I must be missing a setting somewhere. Possibly in DVD Architect, but I don’t know where. Any more ideas would be very much appreciated. Again, thanks for all your help, Ray

    Because it’s just a preview for reference. You should NOT be judging quality from this. Burn a DVD and critique the quality on a TV.

    [Ray Sherman] “1) Clarity is at least 40% less than in the Vegas timeline.”

    Oh, and I forgot to address this. DVD’s have 5x less information than HD (720×480 vs 1920×1080). So the video is only 20% of the information that the HD video on your Vegas timeline has. You may be expecting too much, but view it on a TV and see.

    Hi John,
    I burned a DVD in which the quality is still not there. The DVD looks better than it does in DVD Architect, but no where near the way it looks in the Vegas preview. I did preview the DVD on two different TV’s. The DVD appears to have a little noise as well as horizontal artifacts. I get much better results from my HDDV camcorder upon editing/rendering to DVD than this. I do plan on investing in a Blu-ray reader/writer as well as upgrading to the new upcoming Vegas Pro 11 & DVD Architect 5.2. This may take care of my problem. I sincerely appreciate all your help. All I can say is that I’m thankful for you and all in this forum. Thanks, Ray

    It never will unless you burn a Blu-ray disc. As I said, SD has 5x less information than HD.

    Maybe something in your project is not set correctly. What are your project settings? Your Canon EOS 7D footage should look at least as good as HDV footage.

    Hi John,
    My settings;

    I did play around a little with “Render As” settings.

    The event looked much better in the DVDA preview than previously. I did burn to DVD using the SD template in DVDA.

    Playback on a TV was pretty clean, but of course not as good if done in Blu-ray. For now, this is the best setting I could find until I do my upgrading. Thanks again John, for all your help. Ray
