    Hello all,
I have some animated Overlays, which are M.O.V files with alpha channel.
Main shape is like a ” half-moon ” or crescent, which sits on the left side of screen, and the rest of the screen is black ( alpha ) where your footage shows through.
My question is, how do I use, say, the ” default ” overlay, and get it to take on the attributes of other animation files ? What I mean, is, if the default overlay ( half-moon ) is say sunset colors, I would like it to ” take on ” the attributes of say, another animation, which may have swirling pastel colors ?
In other words, I would like to make many different colored versions of the SAME Default overlay shape.
The other animations are just normal AVI, or MPEG files, with no alpha-so does this complicate the issue ?
Hope I have explained this properly.
    Much appreciation for your help.

The term ‘overlay’ is very general, but I think I understand what you’re asking.

You can use the MOV as an alpha track matte for other footage. Just place that footage below the ‘overlay’ and set its track matte mode to Alpha. This is assuming that your footage has an alpha channel and isn’t just a white object rendered on a black solid in RGB (in which case you should use a Luma Track Matte, or re-render with alpha).

    Thanks Darby,
Not what I wanted, but thanks anyway.

Can you expand on what it is you want exactly? Can you put this in more specific context? I’m not sure if you’ll get much other helpful advice without clarifying exactly what it is you mean.

    Hi Darby,
I have an animation (mov+alpha). It is NOT full screen-but say, half-screen size, in the shape of a crescent. It’s the SHAPE of this animation that I want to use as a ” template ” for ” filling with the colors of other animations, then resave, fill in with another animation, resave, etc etc. I don’t want to do anything else, except to use the default shape and re-colorize, by way of somehow using other animations’ colors.
Example-the shape of the default animation is, say, a banana-shape.
I want a yellow banana, a red one , a green one etc etc.

The reason why the animation is a ” strange shape ” is because it’s an Overlay similar to Lower Third animations, which I purchased online. And all I want is to make many different colored-variations.

    Hope this helps, Darby.
    Many thanks

I still don’t understand why my original suggestion wouldn’t work.

However if you’re just looking to deal with colors you can use a Generate>Fill effect. If you’re actually looking at putting more complex things (other video/compositions) in the shape then a Track Matte or the Channel > Set Matte effect are probably your best bets… or I’ve entirely missed the point =O

    Hi Darby,
Thanks for your patience-I’m a newbie and unfamiliar with a lot of the ” techie ” terms. I found my answer-using Blending>Stencil Alpha.
Works perfect. And your suggestions are also great.
Thanks so much for helping me. I am indebted to you.
    Best regards from Steve
