Does anyone know the answer to this perpelxing question:

We shot a show using the Z1 in HDV, downconverted it using the Sony HDV deck, using the squeeze mode, edited it in FCP 5.03 as a DV 720X420 sequence anamorphic off, and it still looks a little off as far as 4:3 is concerned. It seems a little pillared, people are a little skinny. The network will not accept this. My master will be on digibeta.

Does anyone know if i should go into the motion tab and play with the distort #s? If so what is true 4:3 ‘s Upper Left: Upper Right: Lower Right: Lower Left: Aspect Ratio: 0

or is there a better, more accurate or proper way to do this?????

Thank you all for even reading this post.

The problem seems to be this:

you captured your video “squeezed”….that means rather than cropping a 4×3, you squeezed it down. this method of capture should only be used when you want to use Anamorphic, thereby giving you a 16×9 final product.

What you need to do is recapture…using “crop” instead of squeeze.

then you will have a 4×3 finished product.

    OK here is the situation:

over 100 hrs of footage for a hour show, episode already approved, cannot re-capture…. edited 720X480 NOT 420 i wrote that as a typo. the reason we did not edit 720×486 for digibeta is b/c originally we were going to DVCAM. I did not make the original capture decisions, just edited what i was handed and in the format i was outputing (again DV)

    so i need a solution:

I need to convert this to be a proper 4:3 Re Capturing is NOT an option.

there is no crop feature on the deck only squeeze or letterbox. plus 100 hrs of footage is not gonna happen twice.

i do have a blackmagic decklink card in my FCP G5 systems, is this a possibily

Thanks alot, appreciate the detail, i have no choice but to try this out. i wish i had the option to edit in full res HDV then downcovert later on, but the choice wasn’t mine to make.

My only other question is if i have to deliver a dvcam which will be used to make their digibeta (this is their workflow not mine, my grief is almost over) should i still make it a 720×486 seq. output.??

thanks to all who have been giving me some input and insight.

[M.Venom] “over 100 hrs of footage for a hour show, episode already approved, cannot re-capture…. “

You dont have to re-capture all 100 hours of footage. You could just re-capture the 1 hour of footage that is used in the show.
