Okay – apologies in advance for a dumb question…

I am editing 1080p (23.98PsF HDCAM) material in a 23.98fps timeline in FCP. (Uncompressed 10-bit.) The standard workflow for this show in the past has been to lay off a 1080p master, which goes to another post house for a surround mix and dub to HDCAM SR at 1080i. The other post house makes sure that the program still begins at 1 hour, etc…) That HDCAM SR master goes directly to the network.

Here’s my question: On the slate at the head of this master, I need to provide in and out timecodes for each segment that will be accurate on the 1080i master that goes to the network.

Is there a quick way to calculate those timecodes from the timecodes in my existing 23.98fps timeline?

    Thanks.

Would it be as simple as just creating a new sequence at 29.97 – drop frame, lining up the start of the show with 1 hour and copying the timecodes off the timeline?

Yep, that’ll work. I’d make a complete mixdown of your show as a QT reference, bring that back in, drop in into a 29.97 1080 timeline. It’ll repeat frames which simulates 3:2 that you’d have on a 1080i conversion. Timecodes will translate.

    I’ll try that! Thank you!
