I have a close-up of talent that, in 1080, shows too much detail. Any suggestions how to soften things up using Vegas 13 included plug-ins, Magic Bullet or New Blue plug-ins? Thanks. (This is the first time (!) I’ve shot HD and it’s incredible, the image resolution; but very unforgiving. Can’t wait to shoot some beautiful faces soon, though.)

Ohhh just wait until your first 4k sot.
Alright with the plugs on hand you might try a glow effect from magic bullet. Then there is a convoluted process of creating a mask in your favorite way. IE chroma key, secondary color corrector or mask generator. Then applying a gaussian blur to a child track below via multiply mask. with the original footage at the bottom.
I know you will ask for details and I would have to make a tutorial on the process but if you have some spare $$$ BorisFX has a plugin called BCC Smooth Tone in their image restoration plugins. It’s well worth the purchase price.

    So to reiterate-
    1 Create mask
    2 Create parent child relationship
3 Apply blur to child track (not Media)
    4 Composite over original footage.
This is still iffy and must be used sparingly

Feathered Mask and Blur area need by key framing.

You could try Sony Soft Contrast, there is a diffusion setting there that can soften. Hard to get the setting just right.

NewBlue Selective touch up plugin has soften and blending features. Again use with a feathered mask.

There is also https://www.digitalanarchy.com/beautyVID/specs.html – Digital Makeup plug that should work via openFX in Vegas.
