I have an issue. My user prefs are set to ask me when creating a new sequence. In user prefs I have the setting for a new sequence to be XDCAM 1080P/24 VBR. So when I hit “command N” I get that timebase with the option to change – which I never do. The whole project is EX1 and I use this pre set only.

Today I had problems with a lots of 720p failing to appear in the viewer in the right aspect ratio. On advice here I trashed prefs and remade my FCP prefs carefully.

Tonight I’m taking mini sequences and dropping them into the master sequence and the sequences were screwed again. On checking I find they are in a 1440 rez. I’ve never used or dialed in a 1440 sequence. Must be corrupted?

But my question is how can I restore these 1440 sequences to 1080p?
I drop them into a newly created (very carefully) 1080p sequence and they are still whacked. I made the media offline and re imported. still whacked.

I’m finishing a 66 min project – with only 5 days till it screens (I know, I know) and I don’t want to mis step right now.

    Thanks, Caleb Crosby

XDCam is recorded to 1440×1080. THere are many anamorphic HD formats to help reduce recording bandwidth. If you are woreking native XDCam this aspect ratio is correct.

    What are you mastering to?

    Jeremy,

thanks but everything I’ve read about the EX1 says it records in full res 1920×1080. the word “true” is bandied around a lot.

so i should be editing in a 1440 timebase?

    what are others using?

I’ve read the manual. i read online. how screwed up can things get?
Is the english language still valid? Hell I’m recording at the setting of “1920” in the menu. and I know I have a 1440 (HDV) capture option.

I’ve not heard the 1440 size of the EX1 before now.

    Dude!! Say it ain’t so.

At 35Mb yes it is full raster.
    at 25Mb is is 1440

anything that is not 1920 will need rendering in an EX seq/

Anything that is not 1440 will need to be rendered in the HDV seq

    Thanks for clarifying Gary.

I guess the world remains in Atlas’s hands for another day.

Tell me can you… I shoot 1080p but often mix off sync 720p footage in the same sequences. I’m currently using the XDCAM 1080p VBR setting.

Is there any advantage to using 422 over the XDCAM presets for mixing footage/rendering etc…?

I thought FCP 6 was supposed to handle mixed formats better. You could always do it with long renders!!

    Thanks Caleb

What you do is keep your XDCam preset and then in the render controls of your sequence, change the codec to ProRes. That way all of your renders will avoid the XDCam long goppyness.

Sequence Settings (command-0) > Render Control tab > Codec > Chnage to ProRes from Same as Sequence.
