Need to recover video files from SD Media
Was using a Kodak Zi8 while traveling in Central America and for some reason I can’t import the files to my PC HD from one of the SanDisks.
Importing from other SDs via the USB was no problem but this SD doesn’t show any files in the folder.After a quick search I found this recovery software called “Wondershare” that was supposedly a “trial version” to let me scan and recovery files. Well “surprise!” ; a pop-up tells me I need to buy the software for $34 AND another $6.95 for annual registry ($41.90), with a warning that if I attempt to use another recovery software instead that my files may be corrupted?
So does anyone have any 411 on this? I’d hate to waste money on something that seems a bit misleading from the outset.

That’s how recovery software works. The scan is free and if it finds the files, you pay to recover them. Are the videos worth the $35 charge? If so, then pay it. Plus, annual license fees are easy to opt-out of. Be assured that if the SD card is corrupted then the files might also be corrupted, which means you do have them now but might be unplayable. I went thru this when my mom’s SDHC card became corrupted the day after she returned from a trip to Italy.

Anyone have any luck with Video Repair Tools type of software? I recovered my files but they won’t playback and I get codec not supported errors even though I’ve done everything I could to make sure I’ve got the right codecs. It seems the Kodak Zi8 files are QT and everytime I’ve used it in the past, it seems to cause issues on my PC.
Someone had said I needed to get an older version of QT player… seems make sense but what a PITA to be going back & forth on this.
Anyways… any useful suggestions would be appreciated.

P.S. I downloaded the paid-version of the file recovery tool and was able to save files to HD but they won’t playback in WMP or anything else. Any ideas? I’m wondering if there’s an issue with the files getting corrupted somehow.

Its likely your videos are a loss unless you want to spend more money and have someone try to get them to a playable status. It is very likely that the data is ‘scrambled’ and even if you get them to a ‘playable status’ sections will be a mess and unplayable.

You’re most likely correct about them being a total loss / corrupted.
I had 5 other SD’s that I used on this trip and all others were fine.
Guess this SD just had a glitch somehow. I did a diagnostic scan on it and no errors or bad sections were reported so I’m stumped.Chalk this up to sometimes things just go pffzzztt!! 🙁
