  • Need to recapture 23.976 project to 29.97

I’ve searched this the best I can, and I’m not quite getting the info I need, so here goes….

I’m helping out a producer/editor who captured her entire project as 23.98 (but I think it’s really 23.976), but it turns out her deliverable must be 29.97. She’s going to edit until picture-lock, and at that point I need to (—do something—)

It sounds like what I need to do is export an 24p edl and change it to a 29.97 and then import it. Unless I can somehow just generate a 29.97 edl and then import that into a new bin, decompose, and batch.

But I’ve never done anything quite like this, and I’m not yet familiar with the project. So if someone could explain the procedure, or point me to where it’s been explained, I’d be much obliged.

Most people will just hit play to create 29.97 since the output has a 2:3 pulldown applied. This creates a continuous 2:3 pulldown from beginning to end. Also allows you to protect for other potential develiverables such as a progressive DVD and theatrical.

The workflow is to recapture at the highest 23.976 resolution based on your format (SD or HD).

    Hey Michael

Thanks for the reply. That was my first thought, but the deliverable is the project on a drive. The drive will be shipped to another house. This piece is part of an anthology which is 29.97, and the executive producer will need to be able to make edits as necessary.

So, although labor intensive, the project will have to be recaptured, and I’m trying to figure out the best way.

Avid provides no sane conversion between 24 and 30. If you are in an SD project, you might be able to save your logging. 24 (23.976) uses 29.97 timecode as that is what is on the tape. If you’re working in HD, this will not work.

Export the footage bins as ALEs. This is tricky as you need to have the right headings active. Open them in a text editor. There are items that should identify the frame rate. You might want to open a 29.97 ALE as a point of reference. I can’t tell you exactly what to change off the top of my head. Hopefully you can find the proper items that will let you import the ALEs back into a 29.97 project from which you can batch digitize.

If there are already sequences cut, the best I can offer is export an EDL at 29.97. Bring this into your new project and use it as a template to re-cut the footage.

Alternately, wait a year. Media Composer 4 better address this or Final Cut (unfortunately) really will win.

Thanks for the response. I’ve tried creating an EDL at 29.97 and then importing it into a new 29.97 project, but the Avid won’t import it. Someone else suggested this was a bug in later versions of EDL manager.

One way or another I think this ends up getting done by hand…
