  • Need to know how to “add, insert” chapters in Vegas.

Posted by Jorge Valerio on June 4, 2010 at 6:04 am

    Hello everyone.

First and foremost let me start by telling you that I just started using Vegas pro 9, 3 days ago and I already learned how to do a lot of things just by reading and reading here in the forums. For that, thanks to everyone.

But I need help with the following. I have a video mix (I’m a DJ) that is 50 minutes long that I need to split into chapters. I already have the markers where I want the chapters to begin. So the big question is……….What next?? How do I burn the project onto a DVD in Vegas with all the chapters that I’ve created?? Please help me with this. Bear in mind that I just started using Vegas pro 3 days ago (like I mentioned above) and well, I would need some step by step instructions. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve searched the forum for an answer, but what I’ve found is kind of confusing.

    Thank you in advance

Hi Jorge, Welcome to the community.

You are 99% of the way there. The final step is to tell Vegas to save the markers as chapters when you render. You do this by going to File | Render As… and checking the “[x] Save project markers in media file” like this:

What this does is create a file with the same name and the extension .sfl. If you move your rendered MPEG file you must move this file with it in order for DVD Architect to load the chapter markers (so it’s best not to move the files once they are rendered).

Thank you for the response!!! It was just what I needed!! Now, another quick question. Is it possible for me to burn the rendered file with Vegas pro, so I don’t have to use architect?? The reason I ask is because I don’t know how to use DVD architect. LoL

    Thank you for everything

Yes. Just use Tools | Burn Disc | DVD… with Vegas Pro 9.0e and it will burn a DVD from the timeline without menus. You must be using version 9.0e for this option to show up.

The reason I ask is because I don’t know how to use DVD architect. LoL

DVD Architect is dead easy to use. Just open it up, drop your video file onto the menu, and press Burn. That’s it! Although you might want to change the menu title from “Menu 1” to something a bit more descriptive but it’s that easy.

You can add a chapter menu just by right-clicking your button and selecting “Insert Scene Selection Menu…”. Again, very simple. All of the navigation is done for you.

    Hi John,

I am new to the Vegas product after editing for the past 10 years on a Matrox/Premiere system. I feel very old! I go way back to the Media 100 and even deck to deck 3/4″ editing days so please bear with my dumb questions.

I have had the system for about 10 days. In Vegas, I have managed to complete a basic Bat mitzvah video. On my oId system, I went through a painful process of printing to tape and then burning DVD’s to an external consumer DVD recorder for the past three years. The only plus was that it automatically inserted chapters every five minutes. As I have looked through this forum, the only posts I could find on this subject for DVD Architect lead me to believe that it cannot do this. Is there a setting or button that will allow me to take a master from Vegas, import it into DVD architect and automatically insert chapter points every 5 minutes or so? I have some basic package type videos that I can get out while learning to create menus and chapter DVD’s for my more elaborate packages that are waiting to be completed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I was unable to coax my old system to get me through the year, so I am very much under the gun now to complete roughly 16 summer weddings/events as soon as possible, with the fall season still very much in full swing. Would not have switched gears in mid stream like this under normal circumstances, but really had no choice. I imagine I will be a frequent visitor to Creative Cow for the foreseeable future.

    Thanks. Dan Myers
