Need to Find where the Autosave Project Files Go

Sarah, the autosaved file should be in the same folder that you did your save to but it will have the .bak extension on it (i.e. Sarah-veg.bak).
Rename this file to something like Sarah-new.veg
You should now be able to open this one.
Once it’s open, re-save it under a new name – in more than one location!!

edit: if you don’t have the software, Excalibur has an Autosave feature that is quite handy.
Even if you only install the demo version of it, Autosave will continue to run after the demo expires.
BTW, Edward Troxel (Excalibur’s author) was the one who suggested this to me in the Sony Ate MY Critical Project File !!! WTF!!! thread 🙂

Thank you so much for your help. But I’m afraid that when I downloaded Sony Vegas, autosaved files never saved in the same location where my originally saved files were. I’ll search for .bak files in My Computer and hope the autosaved files will turn up somehow.

And about Excalibur, does this program retrieve autosaved files from before it was installed? Or can it only recover projects that were autosaved after it was installed? I’m not sure if you’re giving me a future precaution or not. And thank you again for helping!

That’s strange as mine always are.
Maybe it’s because whenever I start a new project, the very first thing I do is to give the project a name and save it in the master folder I’ve created for that project.

Maybe C:Documents and Settingsuser nameMy Documents?
Vegas is very good about autosaves so I’m sure they’ll turn up somewhere.

Unfortunately no. What it does is create .bak files in 3 separate locations.

Ah, I found them. Thank you so much.

The search worked and they seemed to be near the same location. It seems one reason I couldn’t find them was because their icons had the internet Explorer icon on them, so I wasn’t sure what they were originally. But thank you for helping you out.

And I’ll look at this Excalibur program, it’ll probably help me out.

I just created an account only to tell you how amazing you are, Mr. Mike! I know it’s been years since this post, but today I had a very hard situation because Sony Vegas decided not to load my project, the one on which I’ve been working for weeks! It was incredibly important to me, I tried many things, such as reinstalling Vegas, opening files on the other computer, but nothing worked; seems that the project file has been damaged somehow. And then I found your post about changing .bak to the other format. IT WORKED. I am saved, my project is saved and I am literally in tears of happiness, cause I really thought that I lost it forever. I am extremely grateful for your help, even if it wasn’t directly for me. So, thank you very very much! 😀

I LOVE YOU SO MUCH, I ALMOST KILL MYSELF WHEN I FOUND MY PROJECT TIMELINE ARE EMPTY. I DONE THE VIDEO ABOUT 6 HOURS AND THE MOST HARD THING IS ANIMATING ON AFTER EFFECTS AND IMPORTING IT TO VEGAS. YOU SAVED MY LIFE!! YOU NEVER BORN IN VAIN!!!
