Need to convert .psd file to targa and preserve transparency
I created a network graphic as a .psd file. Most of the image is completely transparent and the layer for the graphic is set to 25% opacity (it’s a graphic for an on-screen network bug).
I’ve been asked to give them a targa file now.
When I Save As and select Targa, I can choose 16, 24, or 32 bits. If I select 32 bits the saved file will contain an alpha channel. However, that channel is completely white so I don’t think it’s saving my opacity settings anywhere.
When I open the newly saved targa file, the layer is “Background” and locked, the once transparent area is completely white. When I click on Channels, I see there’s an “Alpha 1” channel, but this is also completely white and doesn’t appear to contain any information.
Can someone tell me where I am going wrong and how to save my .psd file as a targa that can be used for on-air graphics that will contain the 25% opacity settings and transparency info?

In Photoshop, if you have a mask applied to a layer (levels of grey from black to white to indicate transparency), you should have a corresponding channel in the channels palette. To make this work, duplicate the channel in the channels palette, name it whatever you’d like, and save it as a Targa file – 32 bit – you’ll see the Alpha Channels check box is automatically selected, meaning it should work.
