Help! This weekend my friends and I shot a music video using the HVX 200. We didn’t have P2 cards so we shot onto tape, 480/24pA. I played back the music from my computer (from FCP) and the band played along to the song. I captured one of the tapes today. I had to look up the correct settings to use, and eventually set my easy setup preferences to DV-NTSC 24p (23.98) Advanced Pulldown Removal. My capture preset was 2:3:3:2 pulldown removal. So I captured everything and am now trying to sync the song up – the very song the band played to all weekend. But when I put the song in where the singing starts in the video, the band seems to play noticeably faster than the song!

My sequence is set to 23.98, but I notice when I go to Item Properties, it says my vid rate for the clip is 29.97 (why?). If I let fcp set my sequence settings for me, it will make a 29.97 sequence, but I still have the same problems with the band playing faster than the audio. It looks sped up just a tad, but that is definitely noticeable in a music video. Did I capture it wrong? Were my settings wrong? Any help would be appreciated!

    Hi Dave,

Thanks for the info. I’ll definitely try capturing small chunks at a time.

I also read something on another website that said when you shoot 24pa, that you are supposed to capture regular DV NTSC, no pulldown, because the camera already flags certain frames (the blended ones) to be removed, thereby making 29.97 into 24 progressive frames. My understanding of this is that since it IS digital, it is 29.97 on the tape and must be captured as such. And that if you capture using pulldown removal, FCP will not only remove the flagged frames, but also randomly (or not so much randomly I suppose) remove additional frames, thereby speeding it up.

Not sure which of these it is, but I’ll give both a try!

    Thanks,

    -Sara

Thank you for all the info! I did try logging chunks and batch capturing and it did indeed work — 23.98 vid rate and it all syncs up.
