Need Smaller MOV files
Posted by Linda O’connell on June 9, 2010 at 3:47 pmI have video files that the longest is 8 minutes. The person I am sending it to is requesting Quick Time files. When I pick the normal default, the 8 minute video is 16.6 GB..
I am using Vegas Pro 8
Does anyone have settings I can use so I can fit these onto a DVD?Thank you so much.
Of course, I am in panic here 😉

June 9, 2010 at 4:14 pmGo in and customize your .mov settings and change the Video format to Sorenson Video 3. A 720×480 video at high quality will be under 1gig with that format. You can also use the MainConceptAVC/AAC .mp4 format (ipod template) and you’d probably want to up the bit rate. I’m not sure if it comes with Vegas 8, but if you have the Sony AVC .mp4 format, that would be your best bet for both quality and file size.
.mp4 is also considered “quicktime”

June 9, 2010 at 5:19 pmAre they requesting files to edit or for the web? That makes a HUGE difference. Just asking for “Quicktime” is quite vague.
What format/resolution are the clips now? If they’re SD 720×480, why don’t you just export as Quicktime DV-NTSC? I don’t know how much footage you have to compress, but you can fit approximately 20 minutes of DV on a standard DVD, give or take a bit.

June 9, 2010 at 7:00 pmFor MainConcept .mp4’s I post to iTunes, I use a Variable Bit Rate of 1,500,000 – 1,350,000 bps. That makes a nice looking video and correlates with iPod specs. However, you could go twice as high as that and still maintain your file size limit. Probably even higher.
The way I approach questions like this is to render out a 1min test vid trying out different specs until I get the results I like.

June 9, 2010 at 7:48 pmI really don’t mean to be annoying…
but these files seem almost too small. I was hoping for something around 1.5GB for 8 Minutes and these are coming out at 137MB.
Is there a happy medium somewhere?I am using the Sorenson 3
It looks like just Sorenson without the 3 gets me the correct file size. Is there any reason why I shouldn’t use that? This is all foreign to me. Thanks.

June 9, 2010 at 7:52 pmKnowing that it is going to be edited, I would render out a 1min test clip of the .mov format using DV/DVCPro – NTSC Video format, slide the quality bar up pretty high. Check the file size and multiply it by 8 to see if it will meet your size requirements.
