  • Need Settings For Very High Quality Rendering (for DVD)

I need the settings you would recommend for creating a DVD which will showcase a product that is being sold (so it needs to be very high quality). Here is the information I’m guessing you may need or want to know….

a.) I am using Sony Vegas 9.0 Pro (64 bit)
b.) My project is basically a video based slide show consisting of 100 high res photos (with some panning and zooming), a music track, plus some captions interspersed throughout
c.) The DVD will be used in the United States
d.) The DVD will be carried around the country and played on whatever TV is available (maybe wide screen; maybe not)
e.) If you suggest one type of settings for wide screen and another for non-wide screens then I’ll take both and simply make two DVDs — one to fit the available equipment.

I’m guessing that’s all you need to know. But I’ll add that up to this point (in my practice sessions) I’ve used the .WMV file type and 8 Mbps HD 1080-30p Video default template — assuming that it was the highest quality setting. But I was disappointed in the quality of the DVD I burned based on the WMV output file this created. I played the DVD a my hi-def wide screen TV.

(One more thing, I am using Windows DVD Maker in Windows 7 to burn the DVD. In that program I used the following settings: 16:9 aspect ratio, NTSC video format, and slow DVD burner speed. Any suggestions in this area would be appreciated as well.)

The quality of your DVD will be cased on the quality of your original file (as lossless as possible) and then the bit rate of the MPEG2 that you must make to use a DVD for display. You need to use a DVD authoring program that will allow you to adjust the bitrate.

Terry, thanks for the input. (I do have a great quality original file.) However, given your additional input, I have three questions:

1.) What bit rate do you suggest for the MPEG2?
2.) Do you have a recommendation on a DVD authoring program?
3.) Are you implying that the rendering settings don’t matter in Sony Vegas 9.0? If they do, it gets me back to my original question which is what should those be set at to produce the MPEG2?

I am assuming that you are creating a SD DVD. I use DVD Archetect to author my DVDs and have ben quite happy with it (your mileage may vary). If you are creating a short program as it sounds like I would use a constant bitrate of 8,000,000. Higher and some DVD players starrt to choke on it. Lower and you start to lose quality. Again it must be an MPEG2 to play in a DVD player.
