need script/expression for long list of names…
Posted by Doug Nash on January 8, 2008 at 4:46 amI’m creating an animation, and need to enter several-hundred names. I need each name to be a separate text layer, with the built-in text tool. Does anyone know of an expression out there, which would allow me to read a long text list from Word or any text edit program, and then generate discrete text layers for each line/name from my document???
This is a major component of my upcoming project, and would be willing to pay someone to write such, if there are no existing scripts floating around.
Thank you so much.

January 8, 2008 at 6:42 amCR Green had a nice script, but it seems his site has been hacked,
so I think that’s why the script is not there

I have a junk email at “mctc 2083 at yahoo dot com”, if you want me to send you the script, write me there, or type yours out like I did so robo-searchs won’t pickup your email. It really was a nice script and may be back up on crgeen in a few days, description below.

Scroll down to “crg_Text_from_File.jsx”. It has the option of putting each line of text on it’s own layer, or all text lines on one layer. Very Nice. Oh, yes it needs a text file (.txt) to work.

January 8, 2008 at 3:30 pmYOU ROCK!!!! Thanks SO much. I tried the script, and it worked. However, and this one seems really weird, for some reason the script won’t see my text files I’m trying to generate. I’m using .txt but when I open the script and browse, it sees them as grayed-out. Odd, to say the least. The way I know it works, was that I actually was able to import a text file of AE prefs. So I know it can do the job, I just have to figure out what is going on with my .txt files.
Any further suggestions?
Thanks again!

January 9, 2008 at 6:10 amGet someone on a PC, any PC, to paste in your text file, into Notepad, then save a .txt from there and see if it works. Should be OK. Maybe go to an internet Cafe or the Library.

January 9, 2008 at 3:54 pmSuccess!
It took some trial and error (doesn’t it always…) but I went into Word on my Mac, and played with the many options in the save menu. I found that using “Text Only with Line Breaks” did the trick, and I was able to bring my text right into AE, as advertised by that script. What a wonderful advantage!
Thanks so much for that continued help!

January 9, 2008 at 5:42 pmThat’s a great script a real timesaver, I just didn’t know it could be cranky with the save txt options. Bravo for finding the elusive formula.

January 9, 2008 at 11:51 pmYeah, it never ceases to amaze me how particular some aspects of these applications can be. But I’m really looking forward to trying out that script for this job!
