Hey guys, I am editing a music video, and need to make the lead singers voice sound
distored like it’s coming through a loudspeaker. Something like a rage against the machine
song, or a beastie boys song. How do I do that?

I have FCP studio 2, with soundtrack pro.

    Thanks- much for your help
    Jeff

Do you have the vocal isolated? If so then you can add distortion and a loudspeaker effect by playing that through a speaker cranked up and re-recording. That’s the old fashioned way and not really easy in FCP.

Second is to take it to an audio facility that has the ability to pass it through various plugins, starting with a convolution reverb for the loudspeaker effect and a distortion plugin.

Either way, it is beyond the scope of FCP. If soundtrack pro supports VST plugins, then you might be able to do it that way. I never use STP so I can’t advise beyond that. Given that a music video is usually for broadcast, I would take the job to a sound post pro who can do all that you want and make sure the end product is broadcast legal.

Just some out-loud thinking here….I’d drop the bass, boost the mid-high range, flatten out the rest of the sound, add a SLIGHT echo, and maybe some ambient noise from a camera microphone in a large room to help sell it.

Or, if you can find it, Cool Edit Pro (which became the first version of Adobe Audition) may have a preset that would do the job quickly. Don’t know if the presets have carried to the newest versions.

    Just a thought…

Send the FCP clip to Soundtrack Pro then try adding Bitcrusher to degrade the quality, and Distortion, specifically lower the Output, increase the drive, and change the tone.
