I am very new to FCP and need step-by-step instructions on how best to get my cut up on You Tube at best quality possible. Just finished cutting a 7 1/2 minute 16 x 9 1080i 30fps sequence using FCP 6 on a MacBkPro. I have tried every which way to do this export, but keep ending up with a squeezed, low quality video.

What sequence settings should I use? Do I need to create a new timeline with new sequence settings? How exactly should I export to Compressor? Once there, what settings should I use in Compressor?

Step-by-step help would be most appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Karina

    Hi Karina,
if your clip is 16×9, you must keep those proportions whatever the size.
    For example you can use:
    – 160 x 90
    – 320 x 180
    – 480 x 270
Web videos are displayed with Square pixels, so will look 16×9.
About compression, try H264/Keyframe: Automatic/ Double Pass.
    For a 480 x 270 clip, try 600 Kbps or so.
The higher de data rate, the best will look. Think that the clip will be re-compressed by YouTube.

There are 2 really easy ways to send a video to youTube.

1- If you have the new FCS3 use the publish to youTube feature that is now in Compressor.

2- Export your video out of FCP, bring into iMovie 08 or 09 and use the send to youTube feature there.

These simple ways involve no messing with settings.

There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.
Don’t let technology get in the way of your creativity!
