hello everyone, this is not necessarily a final cut pro question, but it is possible that the problem may be solved with a fcp plug-in or/and likely the final cut gurus will know where I should go from here.

My wife is a developmental psychologist who does research on self awareness in children. There is a particular research protocol she uses that she would like to improve through the use of a custom video application or plugin to a current software. Right now we are looking for suggestions as to how to find a programmer that may be able to write a software like this.

    The problem:
The research protocol in question is called a ‘Delayed Self Recognition task” This protocol calls for the live video taping of children and subsequent presentation of this video on a large monitor within a specific delay timeframe. This delay can range from live (mimicking a mirror) to up to 3 minutes.

    What she needs:
She needs a software that can be used on a portable system for field research. The software needs to have two options: “Continuous delay” and “stop go” delay.

Under the Continuous setting, the researcher should be able to determine the amount of delay of the video playback from 0 (live) to 3 minutes in frame intervals. For example, the researcher selects ‘live’ and at any given moment clicks a button and the camera begins recording and showing the live image on the monitor. Then the researcher may select 1 sec 3 frames and after clicking a button the camera begins recording but the playback on the monitor will have a 1 second 3 frame delay… and so on.

Under the “Stop and Go” setting, the researchers determines the length of the recording on the system, but he/she would have manual control over the initiation of the recording and the initiation of the playback. So for example, the researcher may select “2 min” and the at any given time he/she would click something that initiates the recording. This recording continues and stops automatically in 2 minutes. Then at any given time the researcher may press another button and the play back from the 2 minute recording will start playing on the monitor.

    Four additional challenges and specs:

    – The playback has to be flipped horizontally so that it mimics a mirror. So when you see your image on the monitor (assuming that the camera is above the monitor) you will see your image as if you were watching yourself on a mirror (minus the angle difference).

    – The playback must be at 29/30 fps or as close to natural movement as possible. Again, during the simultaneous non-delay option the system should be mimicking a mirror so the playback needs to be very natural.

    – The control of start/play needs to be remote controlled (not clicking on the keyboard).

    – The system must be portable. So ideally you will have a powerbook connected simultaneously to the camera and the monitor.

What about this for a challenge?

Ok I know this is quite difficult, but definitely doable by the right programmer. If you have any suggestions as to who may be able to write this software, or if you have ideas as other platforms that may work for this, please let me know. My wife is currently budgeting for a new grant that will include payment for the creation of this system so we would love to talk to someone who may be interested in this challenge.

If you have any ideas please contact me at nestorlld @ explorart.com

    Cheers, Nestor.

    Hi,

it sounds to me like all of this could be done using patch based live video manipulation software without actual programming.

take a look at isadora, https://www.troikatronix.com

this software is designed for live theatre and event based video production, and interactive art installations but it could easily be adapted for the task you want to do. Isadora also supports creating custom control panels without any programming.

if your researcher is fairly tech savvy I think they could create the system themselves, if not you could definately find someone willing to create it for you on the isadora forums.

I think Dartfish can accomplish this. Have a look here: http://www.dartfish.com

I saw a demo where children would line up to kick at a soccer goal. After their turn, they ran to a video monitor which showed their kick just as they got there.

I think Dartfish comes in many shapes and forms, so perhaps there’s a specific version to do this.

Nice to see video being used to help young people rather than sell them something!

Thank you all for your suggestions. I’ll contact these companies and see which may provide the complete solution for this task. Thank you again. Nestor.
