Need help with “noisy” P2 greenscreen
All my experience with P2 media has been very good, up until now.
A recent P2 greenscreen shoot has had some issues. Shot as 720 24p (Native) with an HPX-500.
The green bg measures about 60 to 70 IRE. Looks plenty green to me. The problem is the host’s black suit is crawling with compression artifacting, or the camera op kicked up the gain, or both.
The “grain” (if you can call it that), seems to be degrading the key around the edges, making for a soft edge with stepping/aliasing using Keylight in AfterEffects.
Capture was using the P2 import function in FCP 5.1.4, and was exported from FCP as 1280×720 4:2:2 “Uncompressed”, 1280×720 “None” compression, and the raw anamorphic P2 from the import. All the files give similar cruddy results.
I haven’t talked to the camera op to check on the gain, but I’ve never seen this much noise from P2 material. The shoot occurred before Christmas, so I’m sure I’m wasting my time checking with him…
Other stuff that was shot with an HVX 200 a year ago keys better than this – there was some “stepping” in the antialiasing of the key, but it was pretty easy to correct.
Anyone have a tip for a HD “grain-killer”?
