Need help with effect
I need help… My grandmother passed away last night and my 4-year-old son at his tball game today wrote her initials in the dirt at his tball game and pointed to the sky. What I need is help with when he takes the bat and writes the G and the G in the dirt is having it highlight and look cool in the dirt so the and the G stay and show so my mom sees what he’s doing. I put it on Rapidshare if anyone could hook me up I would be very happy. It comes at the 11-second mark of the clip (roughly). THANKS!!! My email is bi*******@***il.com

Sorry to hear of your loss. Grandmothers are special people. Mine made the best home-made doughnuts in the world. 😉
You really need an application that can rotoscope or vector paint the path. You could try doing it in Vegas with a mask over generated media but it will be very tedious. What kind of effect were you thinking of?

I am not sure. I am really novice at editing (though I love trying) so I was trying to mask/rotoscope it so it left a glowing GG in the dirt but am having so much darn trouble since I didn’t have a tripod and the frame was moving around so much. I just wanted to be able to see the letters that he was drawing in the dirt and have them stay visible so you could see GG when he was done.

I understand what you’re trying to do now. I think you realize that in the future, you really need to use a tripod with the camera locked down for this kind of effect because you have added the additional complexity of tracking the camera movement while rotoscoping. Anything you paint on the video now has to also move with the camera as you’re painting it! You would probably need something like After Effects and Motion Track the camera movement, then stabilize the video long enough to do the rotoscoping, then finally apply the motion tracking keyframes to the rotoscoping spline so that it moves with the camera. You also have to mask the moving T-Ball stand which should be in front of the rotoscoping at all times. This is not beginner stuff.
I would get your tripod out, dress your son up in his uniform and take him back out to the field, and shoot it again as a static locked down shot with no camera movement. Don’t use the T-Ball stand. Then all you have to do is follow the head of the bat in the dirt.
