We’ve got a great 4-minute steadicam shot that follows various people around a bar setting as they address the camera.

What we’d like to do (and this occurred to us after watching the footage) is maybe make the background black and white while the actor addressing the camera remains in color. We think this will be a great way to further differentiate between when the characters are “in” the movie and when they are breaking the fourth wall and speaking outside the film to the audience.

I can tell this will be no trivial thing to accomplish, but does anyone have any idea what it entails? – The scope of the job? – If Vegas can handle this or do we need another tool?

    Thanks you,
    -Paul

I know that Ed Troxel did something on this—https://www.jetdv.com/vegas/forum/viewtopic.php?t=886

I would think this would be most closely related to the “Pleasantville Effect” – take a look at vol 3 #4 of my newsletters.

You may be able to accomplish what you need with our Colorize effect. Colorize lets you isolate individual colors in the image and paint only them (and close hues under your control) leaving other colors black and white. If your subject uses some different colors from the background, you should be able to pull it off.

Best way to find out is to give it a try. You can download the effect and try it out, see if it works for your scene. If it does work, it will be insanely easy.

We have a short tutorial on Colorize at https://www.newbluefx.com/art_effects.html.

If Colorize does solve it for you, we’re still running our introductory special for the Vegas community: Order both Motion Effects and Art Effects and get $40 off. Just type in the coupon code CPNINTROVIDEO after selecting both.

    Good luck!
