  • Need Help Upconverting DV Graphics to HD

I am onlining a DV project to DVCPRO HD 1080 29.97. The original project file was edited with downconverted DV footage, as well as DV resolution graphics. I am at a loss because I do not have any of the original graphics, and have no access to the creators of the project file, so I must either recreate them, or upconvert them, as the lower resolution will not work in the HD sequences.

I have basically two types of graphics to upconvert.

    1. Still Text Graphics (Photoshop files): I will re-create all text graphics at a higher HD resolution. I have a couple questions here. In the original DV file, the sequence Frame Size was a standard 720 x 480, while the text graphics that were created in photoshop were 853 x 480. I’m relatively new to importing text and graphics from photoshop into FCP, so I wasn’t quite sure why they used 853 x 480. So I’m not sure what my new framesize for these graphics should be considering that my video frame size is 1280 x 1080. Furthermore, I did a couple quick tests within photoshop,…and when trying to overlay text graphics from photoshop into FCP, certain effects like drop-shadows seem to get lost in translation…any idea why that is? For example, my text overlay in PSD has a black drop shadow,…but once I import it into FCP, just the plain text appears, with no drop shadow.

    2. Rendered Graphic Videos (.mov animations): These are quicktime files that were originally rendered as quicktime .mov files (Animation compressor with a framesize of also 853 x 480). What is the best way to upconvert these so that I can use them in my DVCProHD 1080 sequences? Also, what target frame-size should I have?

I appreciate any help with this matter…

    DVCPro HD 1080 frame size is 1440 x 1080.

Create the graphics in a standard 1920 x 1080 frame in Photoshop. When you’re done, change the Image Size to 1440×1080 and be sure to UN check “Constrain Proportions” when you do this. That will put an anamorphic squeeze on the graphic to match the DVCPro HD video frame. FCP will stretch the graphic back out in the timeline.

These are not going to look that great when you blow them up. DV graphics are already heavily compressed with a lot artifacts. When you blow it up, you’re going to see a mess of artifacts. Just drop them into the DVCPro HD timeline and scale / stretch them up to full frame size. This is the best way to handle this.
