    Dear Creative Cow Members,

I currently own a LaCie Bigger Disk Extreme 2TB external harddrive, which is almost full with data from archived video editing projects. I would like to purchase a second identical drive and set them up as a Mirrored RAID using OSX’s Disk Utility. My thinking is that this configuration will provide me with an automatic, real-time backup of my data. I have a few critical questions:

1.) When I set up the Mirrored RAID using Disk Utility, will my existing 2TB of data be erased? If yes, how can I avoid this?

2.) How does the 2TB of data from my existing drive find its way onto the new, additional drive in the Mirrored RAID?

3.) What block size should I use?

4.) Should I use the “Automatic Repair” feature, or is that only applicable if I designate a third, “spare” disc?

Thanks very much in advance for the answers to these questions – I sincerely appreciate your help!

    – Jordan

“will my existing 2TB of data be erased”
    – Yes your existing data will be erased,
“If yes, how can I avoid this?”
    – buy 2 new drives and mirror rade them
“How does the 2TB of data from my existing drive find its way onto the new, additional drive in the Mirrored RAID?”
    – You copy it onto the new mirrored raid
