Need HELP reinstalling 6.5 update
Posted by Paul Gordon on February 15, 2009 at 12:31 amAfter a hard drive crash, I am trying to reinstall After Effects version 6.5.
I am getting ‘invalid serial number’ all the time.
This is an ‘update CD’ where they are asking for a previous serial number.
I get by the ‘initial’ serial number, which is the one for my 6.5 CD, but for the previous version serial number, I can’t get by this part.
I called Tech Support but they couldn’t help.
I tried installing in safe mode….no good.
I made sure my Adobe Registration Database was good and it is.
I copied the installer to my hard drive but that didn’t help.
Can anyone help me….please?
Thank you,
Paul

so you are entering a previous version’s serial number (like from ae 5.5) and it is not working? or, you don’t have the serial number from the previous version?
if you have a previous version, make sure that the previous version you are getting the serial number from can be upgraded by the upgrade disc. if, for example, you had version 5.5 ‘standard’, but the upgrade was for version 4.0 ‘production’ and up it may not upgrade the ‘standard’ version. also, i think that you need to make sure you select which previous version of ae you are using the serial number from… i think i have forgotten to select the correct version once or twice…
if you don’t have the previous version’s serial number anymore, then i see two options. look online for an earlier version (maybe ebay), or buy an upgrade from 6.5 to a newer version. the newer version will be able use the 6.5 upgrade serial number to install the newer version. if you had the standard version of 6.5 and upgrade to cs3 or later you will get an added bonus of being able to upgrade to the pro bundle for no extra cost (adobe dropped the standard version from it’s options a year or so ago).

February 17, 2009 at 12:40 amHi Kevin,
Thanks for your response.
I have BOTH the 6.5 AND previous serial numbers (version 4.1).
I also called Adobe and they gave me 6 other serial numbers to try and I am STILL stuck when I try to enter a PREVIOUS VERSION serial number.
I remember having a purple dongle which I misplaced and has yet to be found. Can this be the culprit?
I don’t know.
Thanks again,
Paul

potentially, but i don’t think so….
can you install 4.1? if you can get it installed and enter the serial number for it, then 6.5 should install without needing to enter a valid serial number (it should see that there is a valid 4.1 already installed and bypass that step). although if 4.1 needed the dongle to be a ‘valid’ copy of ae, then the 6.5 installer may still have a problem with it…. but i think tech support might have known that this was an issue.
also, you mentioned that you tried to copy the installer to the hard disk… did you make a disk image from the installer, you just copy the contents of the disc to your hard drive. you should create a disk image, then run the installer from the disk image, though i don’t think that will help you with this problem….

February 17, 2009 at 4:25 amHi,
No…I can’t install 4.1 since it needs ‘classic’ and I am on 10.4.11.

i kind of figured that 4.1 wouldn’t be compatible with any os made within the last 6 years…
that means even if you had the dongle it would have been the old round adb connector, so unless you have a g3 (i think the only mac that came with both adb and usb) i don’t know what good it would do for you now…
do you have an old mac around? if you do, you might be able to install 4.1 on it, pull the drive out and pop it in the current mac. i don’t know what your current mac is, but even if it was a macpro, the optical drive bay still uses an ide bus, that should be the same bus a hard drive from many g4s and earlier use. then, maybe the 6.5 upgrade will recognize the 4.1 version on a second hard drive.
you obviously installed this upgrade at one point… do you remember what version of the os it was? you may be able to install that older os, then install the 6.5 upgrade, then update the os to the version you are currently using…

February 17, 2009 at 5:18 pmyou tried safe boot… but you could try enabling the root user and installing from the root user. see the apple help menu for enabling the root user, then logout and login as root to try and install 6.5 again.
i don’t know if i see a good reason why this would work, but it’s pretty easy to try it…
