    Hello,

I have a colour timed 4444 master and there are some scenes with subtitles from the post house. Unfortunately, the post supervisor never asked for a textless master.

So far, I tried painting out the subtitles, but obviously they are fixed in one place so motion tracking doesn’t help.

Secondly, I tried going frame by frame, which is tedious then export the clip, re-import and create a mask around the area and track, and paint over so it looks similar. tedious and depending on the scene, doesn’t always produce good enough results and inconsistencies can be scene.

What I would like to do, is take a frame/scene before the subtitles pop in, take that into fusion (not sure if I would have to export it into a separate clip then re-import it into resolve, ((because I don’t think fusion can paint from a prior clip in the timeline, if so please let me know how to achieve that)) then drag it from the bin into fusion to create another media in). Once in fusion then have that into monitor view 1 and my scene with the subtitles on monitor view 2, then paint from the clip without subtitles over the clip with subtitles.

So, in essence, paint from the clip without subtitles over the clip with subtitles and track as best as possible.

Would there be a better way for better results? or if I am missing a step from my idea above would any of you assist me in the steps to take to produce the desired results?

    Thank you very much!

Ha! I responded to this and then saw the orig post is from 2022!! Very curious how this worked out. — Oh well… here is my response…………………. Tricky situation for sure, but I think you are headed down the right line of thinking. You will probably need to replace more than just the text, like maybe the whole lower 25% of the frame. You might find this easier to match/track. Since it sounds like you are not super versed in Fusion, I would export a still at full res, full color of your clean frame. Open that in photoshop and paint out/remove the top 75% or whatever is needed so that that portion is transparent. Be sure it is a soft edge. Export a 16bit PNG with transparency. Bring that into Resolve. If the camera is locked, then you can just layer the still on a video track above. If moving, you can track and “match move” in Fusion. Lots of tutorials on YT for that. It’s gonna be tricky and probably not work for every shot. Someone has that project! 🙂
