June 27, 2006 at 1:25 amif you want everything, then the HD10ava miniconverter (coming soon, i am waiting on mine) and the Kona 3 will give you that.
analog input from beta, sd, HD, hdv…and the kona 3 will do the up, down and cross convert, oh, and native 2k to boot.
the price is right because i dont know anyone else offers all these capabilities
good luck and have fun with that set up!

June 27, 2006 at 3:16 ambasically, you want to do EVERYTHING, including up and down conversion (and up conversion is the key here, as no Blackmagic card can do this currently) – SO – what you want is a combination of the AJA I/O (the full box) and the AJA Kona 3, AND the AJA HD10AVA (for your HDV product). If you did not want upconversion, you could have just chosen the AJA Kona LHe, but you want upconversion, and only the Kona 3 does upconversion, but it only has HD-SDI inputs – so you need to convert your analog HD signal from your HDV VTR into HD-SDI, and that is what the AJA HD10AVA will do for you.
The whole package will cost you about $6000, and you will be able to do EVERYTHING, from VHS to dual link HD-SDI, and everything in-between.
And to answer your next question (isn’t there anything for $2000 that can do everything for me – even from another manufacturer) – the answer is NO !

June 27, 2006 at 3:33 ambob,
the HD10AVA has 4 channels of XLR and dual rate HD/SD for analog ingest, so the IO, while nice and has blue lights, is overkill for a simple Kona 3/K3box and HD10AVA. $4200. a bit less than 6k, but good point, no one else can do it.

June 27, 2006 at 1:29 pmBob’s right I do want everything, is that so wrong? If i get the kona 3/aja h10ava combo, how do i record back to beta sp or vhs for that matter?

June 27, 2006 at 3:26 pmThe Kona 3 has analog component outputs that are switchable between component, s-video, and composite. You would hook those up to your beta and then route from your beta to your VHS. Even though the io is pricier, it can also act as an audio and video router. It has SDI, component, s-video and composite outputs as well as ADAT, AES, and analog XLR audio outputs that are all active all the time. It really depends on your needs. If you truly need everything all the time the Kona 3 and the full io is a really sweet setup. If you need to travel with this system, then perhaps the AVA combo is better as it’ll save ya on some weight. If you decide to go with the AVA (which I’m sure is not a bad solution) then you will be hooking up more cables and will perhaps need a patch bay to connect all your stuff and things.

June 29, 2006 at 1:47 pmUsing the full Io with Kona3 is also the only way to get software video level adjustments (with Io control panel) during capture. This lets you control proc amp levels from the desktop when you are using the Io as a converter into the Kona3.
