OK, I’m sure after this I’m going to get a lot of replies lecturing me on organisation and you’ll all be right!

When I first installed Final Cut I just dived in there and so my folders are all over the place and I need to organise them.

I have 3 drives 2 internals and 1 external, they have all been my scratch at one point or another, but it’s the organisation of my boot and 2nd drives that I need help with.

I now have a situation whereby my 2nd drive (internal) is my scratch disk and I have a folder called Final Cut Documents which holds all my most recent render files and is the one in use at the moment.

My problem is, through my earlier disorganisation I’ve now got duplicate folders, which I’m not entirely sure I can delete.

So on my 2nd drive outside of my Final Cut Documents folder I have a capture scratch folder, with some old files in it; can I move these files and delete the folder?

Also outside the FCD folder I have a Waveform cache folder, audio render files and auto save files folders, all of which are empty; can I delete all these folders?

Lastly I have a thumbnail cache folder, containing 2 old files and a render files folder containing a constant frames folder with some old files in it? Can I move/delete the files then delete these folders?

Moving to my boot drive now I have a Final Cut Pro Documents folder contaning all the same folders as above, most of them contain (old) files, especially the waveform cache folder which has a number of files in.

Is it OK to move/delete these files and folders?

Sorry if it’s a bit of a silly question, but I thought I’d better ask before wiping stuff, many thanks in advance.

Well, I will be a salesman and say “hey, I have a tutorial DVD FULL of tips on how to organize footage for FCP, both on the Finder level and in the project. That can be found here:”

    https://store.creativecow.net/p/63/getting_organized_in_final_cut_pro

Now I will help with some of the small specifics you ask.

[Roli Rivelino] “So on my 2nd drive outside of my Final Cut Documents folder I have a capture scratch folder, with some old files in it; can I move these files and delete the folder? “

Consolidate all of your media for each project to one folder. The CAPTURED media. Then when you open FCP, reconnect to that media…you can even tell FCP to search for the media ONLY in that location. But what I’d do is copy the media, leave the originals alone, but disconnect the drive. Don’t delete until you are sure everything reconnects. Same with REnders.

    [Roli Rivelino]
Also outside the FCD folder I have a Waveform cache folder, audio render files and auto save files folders, all of which are empty; can I delete all these folders? “

IF they are empty….sure, why not?

[Roli Rivelino] “Lastly I have a thumbnail cache folder, containing 2 old files and a render files folder containing a constant frames folder with some old files in it? Can I move/delete the files then delete these folders? “

Sure. If some renders go missing, all you need to do is re-render.

[Roli Rivelino] “Moving to my boot drive now I have a Final Cut Pro Documents folder contaning all the same folders as above, most of them contain (old) files, especially the waveform cache folder which has a number of files in. “

Leave the AUTOSAVE, and CACHE folders ALONE. Those are you main folders for such things. They should be there. All the CAPTURES should be on the separate drive, but the cache and autosave should be on the main system drive.

Now get my DVD so that you know how FCP organizes things, so that you also have a better grasp of how to do it yourself.

Shane’s DVD is terrific, however, at this point you should use Media Manager to copy everything in your current project that you select to a new directory on your new drive. It also creates a new project when it does this BTW. This allows the computer to do the work for you and it avoids human error. Read up on it in the manual. It does have the nasty habit of moving all files to a single directory, but it gathers everything, and it’s a whole lot better than having them spread all over. Once they are in a single place you can then use Shane’s organizational techniques.
