  • Need Help! New To HD Hardware and HVX-200 Camera

Posted by Tony Velez on January 13, 2008 at 10:53 pm

I am a student and mainly a hobbyist right now. Not an industry working professional. Please Understand this before you read further.I Am totally new to HD and the Panasonic HVX-200. Assume that i know nothing almost. Whoever can educate me on what i will need to achieve what i want to do would be greatly appreciated. Here is what i want to do…
-Keep in mind, I mainly want to shoot music videos for now.
    -I want to purchase a Panasonic HVX-200
-I want to Shoot in Panasonic DVCPro HD 1080/24p
-I want to load the footage from the HVX-200 through Firewire into the computer’s Firewire Port.
-I want to edit That HD Footage in Final Cut Pro and Render my final edited video into an HD file as well as other formats so i can upload it to Youtube and Vimeo.
-Finally i want to burn my final video to a Regular DVD for playback on a regular DVD player and also to an HD DVD for playback on an HD DVD player.
-I want to do all this on a Computer that will be custom built with computer parts that will actually run MAC Leopard Operating System. Leopard will run on a custom built computer so long as you use the proper hardware that is compatible with Leopard OS such as the Motherboard,CPU, RAM, and Video Card. A Friend of mine did it and it runs beautifully. Have i seen his computer run Final Cut Pro and Edit HD video on it, NO. Only because he doesnt use his computer for Video, hes into Web Design, But I dont see why it wouldnt run Final Cut Pro because he has all the Mac Version Adobe Softawre such as photoshop, illustrator, dreamweaver and it runs like an orchestra. I was stunned, but if i build my own system with Fast enough hard drives, 4GB ram, Intel Motherboard, Quadprocessor, basically same parts that Apple is using in their Mac Pro’s, Do any of you think the Computer Will Be Able To Handle it? Ive already had one person call me crazy so unless u have something intelegent and beneficial for me to say, please refrain from making pointless responses. If someone knows what i will need for Computer Hardware to be able to do what i want to do and have it Handle HD Footage and Editing on the timeline smoothly, Please inform me on what type of Hard Drives i will need and how fast they should be. If all you can say is to get an actual MAC Pro, that is not what i am asking you to tell me. Anyone including myself knows that i could order an actual MAC Pro from Apple and be good to go. I Am trying to avoid that pricey cost of an Apple Computer.

What i do not need or want to do is the following…..
-I do not need to output my video to broadcast quality or format.
-I do not need to monitor my HD video on an external HD TV or HD Monitor since my videos will not be for broadcasting. I am not employed in the industry and i will not be doing videos for Television.
-I do not need 2TB of storage.
-I do not need to load footage into a capture card via HDMI or Analog Cabel Inputs. Basically im not looking to spend money on an AJA Card or Black Magic Card. If im correct, for what i want to do, they are unnecessary unless im completely wrong someone please inform me.

    First off, watch this tutorial:

    P2 Workflow with FCP 6

And how to get to DVD:

Shane’s Stock Answer #42 – David Roth Weiss’ Secret Quick and Dirty Way to Author a DVD:

The absolute simplest way to make a DVD using FCP and DVDSP is as follows:

    1. Export a QT movie, either a reference file or self contained using current settings.

    2. Open DVDSP, select the “graphical” tab and you will see two little monitors, one blue, one green.

    3. Select the left blue one and hit delete.

    4. Now, select the green one, right click on it amd select the top option “first play”.

    5. Now drag your QT from the broswer and drop it on top of the green monitor.

    6. Now, for a DVD from an HD source, look to the right side and select the “general tab” in the track editor, and see the Display Mode, and select “16:9 pan-scan.”

    7. Hit the little black and yellow burn icon at the top of the page and put a a DVD in when prompted. DVDSP will encode and burn your new DVD.

    THATS ALL!!!

NOW…if you want a GOOD LOOKING DVD, instead of taking your REF movie into DVD SP, instead take it into Compressor and choose the BEST QUALITY ENCODE (2 pass VBR) that matches your show timing. Then take THAT result into DVD SP and follow the rest of the steps. Except you can choose “16:9 LETTERBOX” instead of PAN & SCAN if you want to see the entire image.

As for Compressing for YouTube and…that other place I never heard of…use COMPRESSOR and the QT 7 Streaming options.

So, I take it that you are planning o building a PC box that can use a copy of Leopard that is “cracked” to run on an Intel platform?

Building the hardware is not unthinkable. Apple uses all standard PC components such as 7200 RPM 3.5″ disk drives and unless you are going to be able to purchase an Apple motherboard and case, I can only guess you are trying to build a standard PC box to run this on?

One area that you are going to have problems with is the video card. Apple motherboards can not use off the shelf PC video cards.

On the other hand, I really don’t understand how you are going to build this for less than Apple pays to put on of theirs together. The main cost of a computer are the CPU chips and the latest Intel CPU’s are not a bargain.

If you have a fair amount of computer sense and some money to throw at this then give it a go. Seems that your friend was able to, somehow;so nothing like learning!

OH…I didn’t read that part. You DON’T want to buy a MAC to run this on? OK then…you can make a Hackintosh…but no guarantee that it will run FCP well.

I built one for my kids to get online. Under $300 and faster than my Dual 2Ghz.

Yes i do plan on doing this on a custom built PC that will run leopard. Idk how my friend does it, but hes got Leopard running on one that he built. He said the MAC OS is very picky and therefore he has to use a certain video card, a particular NVIDIA card works with it just fine. It really isnt that expensive for the parts. Wed basically be using an Inter Quad, all intel internals as far as the CPU goes. The hard drives would be raid setup since i hear this is the best performance for handling HD if im correct. But lately ive had second thoughts about all this, Its alot of money to be able to shoot and edit HD and if im dropping this much money to begin with, idk if i wana run the risk compatability issues with a setup such as that. I havent seen his setup run Final Cut or do any video stuff just yet so its not like its been tested and proven. Now im looking into an actual MAC PRO that is just gona rape me price wise. Idk, ill figure somethin out.

I wish people would not use tla’s on these forums. It’s such a distraction.
