i am making a show open.

i captured DV50 off of a BETA into avid. I exported it same as source.

In after effects i used HUE/SAT to make the clip black and white. but you see all the noise pixels when doing this.

how can i get a better BW clip that doesn’t look gritty?

also, any tips of blowing up the footage too wtihout the grain? a lot of these shots are from conference and the framing sucks.

    Hey

Colorama effect might help you. Just apply Colorama to your footage or to the adjustment layer, change the Output Cycle to Ramp Gray and there you go.

I’m sure you;ll find your way around it. Play with the Output Cycle.

    Good luck.

You shouldn’t use Hue/Saturation to desaturate footage. Instead try using either the Tint effect or the Channel Mixer effect.

If you’re at all familiar with the Channel Mixer in Photoshop then you should feel comfortable with this effect, if not then I’d recommend reading up on it some in the help files or online.

The Channel Mixer may also help you avoid some of the noise & grain. The Blue color channel is usually the noisiest, so you could make it contribute very little (or not at all) to your final B&W image.

Channel mixer is my recommendation. The best way I know to make beautiful black and white without Magic Bullet.

i know about using a good channel in photoshop instead of desaturating. i just wasn’t sure if you all did that in after effects too. sometimes projects come so fast that you have to resort to an easy method without time to mess with other things.

i will try the channel mixer.

    thanks for the tips!
