Need help ingesting P2 Cards to laptop….
Posted by Dan Nethery on October 1, 2009 at 3:36 pmWe had a stink the other day. One of our cameras got damaged during the travel to the location. So we are using a loner for a couple of days. Not quite sure what camera it is, but it’s a P2 format. The cam op has a mac laptop with him and final cut express. Not Pro.
We need to figure out a way for him to get the video off of the camera so he can put it to a drive and ship it back. It’s not important for him to review the video, but just be able to get it back to us in a way that we can ingest it into FCP here.
Can he just mount the cards though the camera and copy the mxf files via a firewire cable? Then we ingest them though the file transfer in FCP? Or run them though another software putting them into a QT format?
Thanx for any help
dan.

October 1, 2009 at 4:18 pmTransfer is via USB- I’d suggest a peek into the manual for details. You need to have FCP 4.5 or up installed on the computer and run it through log and transfer.

October 1, 2009 at 6:18 pmWhat laptop? If you have a G4 Powerbook, then it has a slot that accepts P2. But if he has a MacBookPro, that won’t work without the Duel Systems Adapter. So you would have to use the camera. And you CAN do this via firewire, as the camera default is 1394.
First thing…make sure you have the P2 card driver installed. Found at https://www.panasonic.com/p2. The P@ card driver…without that, the card won’t show up.
Then with the card in the camera, and the camera connected via firewire, press the MCR button on the back to get into THUMBNAIL mode. Then press and hold MCR again, but hold it for 3-4 seconds, until you see on the LCD, 1394 DEVICE. Then the camera will act as a P2 card reader.
Then…follow this tutorial: P2 Workflow with FCP 6

January 6, 2010 at 11:32 pmHi Shane
I was looking over your posts on this and was wondering – Do ALL Powerbook G4s have that PCMCIA slot? My old Powerbook G4 is from 2006.
I’m not sure what the slot looks like, but would it show up when I click on “About this Mac”? What mine says is: PCI Cards, and next to that it says PCIXXXX-00
Is that it? It kind of looks like the slot on my MacBook Pro, but twice size
Also, my powerbook only has 1.5 gigs of RAM. Is that enough?
Thanks very much

All the 15″ models did…yes.
[Isaac Brillant] “Is that it? It kind of looks like the slot on my MacBook Pro, but twice size “
Yup, that’s it.

January 7, 2010 at 9:00 pmHi Shane,
I’m trying to figure out which drivers I need for my powerbook G4 to read the P2 cards, but I’m not sure I understand all the terminology on the Panasonic website. I suppose I could download all of them, but I dont want to bog down this old G4 with stuff it doesnt need…
I know you’re not like Panasonic Technical Support or anything, but if you have a chance, could you clarify this for me? Sorry that this is a long post, but I’m copying from the site.
First off, do I need all of the following (listed on the panasonic link that you posted)
1) E Series P2 Card Compatibility
Download the latest firmware to ensure your P2 product is compatible with the new E Series cards2) P2 Products Firmware Updates
All the info you need to know about upgrading your P2 product (camcorders, field recorders and workflow tools), including 32GB and 16GB P2 card compatibility.3) P2 Driver for PC/Mac
Download the latest driver software to enable your PC/Mac system to use P2 cards (including 32GB and 16GB).4) P2 Contents Management Software
View the contents of your P2 cards on compatible PC/Mac systems. And then, on link 1) above, it says (I’m only listing the parts that I think MIGHT apply to the powerbook G4 running Tiger):
The following devices are supported by P2 driver packages:
AJ-PCD20 1394b Driver – ver 1.21
AJ-PCD35 PCIe Driver ver 1.10-
CardBus Driver ver 1.5- - CardBus Driver
P2 Card Formatter Software – ver 1.00 Only for AJ-PCD20, PCD35, CardBUS
AJ-PCS060G USB Driver – P2 Store Manager – ver 1.00/1.10 ver 1.00/1.14So, uh, which of these are relevant to me? Is the CardBus the slot on the mac?
And then under that it says:
“No Need the following driver for Mac
USB : No need Driver /1394a : No need Driver
AG-HPX170 seriesSo, what does that mean? I dont need a driver?
Also, in addition to the drivers, theres “Software for P2 Products(Firmware)” Do I need that too?
Thanks!!

January 7, 2010 at 11:02 pmHi,
It turns out that all the drivers I need (I think) came on a CD in the box. Although the manual says that its compatible with OSX 10.4.8 and mine is 10.4.11
Is that a problem?
Thanks
