    DVDA3
    Pioneer DVR 110D
    Nero 6.3.0.3

I tried burning a 120 minute program with two subtitle tracks(6.0GB program according to DVDA)onto a Ridata Double Layer +R with disappointing results. I first used DVDA to burn and it seemed to go fine, burning the program in about 30 minutes, but then stalled on the lead out until 1 hour and 30 minutes passed and it timed out. DVD would not play.

Then tried burning with Nero, since many posts have raved about it’s “no coaster” performance. Disc info reads “Available capacity 8,152MB”, yet when I try to burn I keep getting the error message that “Compilation won’t fit onto a blank disc”. (Granted, I didn’t get another coaster, but I didn’t get the program onto the DVD either).

It has been suggested that -R media will solve many burning problems, but alas, no -R DL DVD media to be found in our town! Before I order some -RDL media from the internet I would like to hear whether the general consensus is still to avoid +RDL and go with -RDL.

Also, what is this Nero thing? Why won’t it burn a 6GB program onto an 8MB disc? All ideas appreciated.

I have had a lot of issues using DVDA to burn to disc, very similar to what you describe. I too have had double whammy’s with Nero, although not exactly as you describe. In each and every instance a full reboot and burn with Nero does the trick. I have become so ‘coaster’ shy that I now immediately reboot after the DVDA prepare before burning to disc. Hopefully a future version of DVDA will address some of these shortcomings as the enhancements from 1.x to 3.x are outstanding, so much so I have no problem with the above temperament issue:-)

    BTW I too have a dual-layer drive, a Sony.

Thanks, BigD. I did a reboot, tried Nero and got the same error, “Compilation won’t fit onto a blank disc”.

Just use DVD shrink to make sure it fits exactly on to a DVD-9, and then use the same program to burn or use CLoneDVD2 to burn it. Both support DL media. I’ve burned probably about 60-70 DL disks, and not one coaster this way.

Bets of luck, keep us updated!! 🙂

I would never use DVD Shrink to make a DVD smaller. All you’re doing is taking an MPEG2 file and shrinking (i.e. RE-RENDERING) to a smaller MPEG2 file which can only result in a loss of quality. Instead, I would re-render from the original source to a smaller MPEG2 file.

However, in the above case, the indication is that the DVD is small enough but Nero is confused saying that 6 Gig of info won’t fit on an 8 Gig disc.

I upgraded the firmware on my brand spanking new Pioneer DVR 110D (seems weird you have to upgrade new equipment.

I changed the Secondary IDE channel to DMA – it had been set on PIO because that is the only setting my previous burner, Pioneer AO4, would work on – rebooted and prepared the files again and tried burning again with DVDA3 and it stalled at 36%.

Changed the IDE channel back to PIO, rebooted, prepared program again and burned again. “Estimated size = 5.9GB, 70% of 8GB disc”. Burned 99% in 41 minutes and stalled at “Burning Lead Out”. Timed out. Another expensive coaster.

Am downloading Nero upgrade and will try burns tomorrow with Nero on my two remaining DVD+R DL discs and then will order -R if the +R still don’t work.

    Anyone feeling my pain?

After the burning timed out there was red bar at lower right of DVDA that said:
“Disc Space Used: 9.6GB”. Is this why my burns are failing?
    Original estimated size was 5.9GB.
    Can someone explain this?
