  • Need help achieving this look for Vortex Effect…

Posted by Bill Whirity on January 12, 2009 at 11:07 pm

I’m working on creating a vortex effect and am having some issues. I stumbled upon a “look” that I want to achieve but am unsure on how to get it. When I move through the timeline the vortex looks like this before the computer generates a full preview image:

    vortex while generating preview

I like the way this looks and was wondering what I can apply to the actual vortex (below) to give it that look? I tried a fast blur but that loses the detail and Liquify doesn’t give me the right results.

Any ideas on how to take the vortex I currently have and make it look the way it does while it renders the preview image? Sort of the that harsher exploding out, firey kind of look. Any help would be much appreciated!

*NOTE: between the two stills you should be able to see which effects I’m using if this helps.

This may not give you the exact look you want, but you may find it useful:

    Duplicate the comp.
Blur the top copy and maybe boost the contrast with levels or curves.
Change the blending mode to something that accentuates highlights like add or screen.

What Jason said sounds like a good idea, I would add that you might try a radial blur instead of a fast blur for your top level layer.

Sorry to butt i and I haven’t viewed your uploads. Suggest you hit https://motiongraphicslab.com/ to see Dean’s vortex effects. He uses nothing more than text animation and various blurs, often vector blur. Sometimes he has freebies on his site.

Radial blur did work better, but nothing is still giving me the look of that one still when the computer is processing the image 🙁

I noticed if I set the viewer settings to “Third” or Quarter” quality I get the look I desire. How can I effect the layer to achieve look of the lower the quality? I’ll try to upload the proj file.

here’s the project file if anyone’s interested in checking it out:

    Vortex.zip

This is a RED 2K project done in 16bpc. The look desired is what you see when the Viewer is set to Quarter Quality, but I’m not sure how to translate this into what will actually be rendered out…

Figured it out, I double up the comp and added a Sapphire Glow to it and that get me close enough to where I need to be. Thank for all your help!
