REPLY – you ask too many questions – but here are your answers –
Aja or Black Magic?
REPLY – you own the AJA I/O, so buy the AJA Kona 2 with the K-Box
keep my IO or sell it? would like to sell it because of the FW latency but it works great and would allow me to buy HD only card.
REPLY – keep your I/O. Don’t sell it. You have too much analog stuff that still must happen, and the I/O is too good/too cheap/too valuable to get rid of, and works perfectly with the AJA Kona 2
PCIX or PCIe?
REPLY – PCI-X – you are about to start a new show – don’t be a guinea pig.
New G5 quad or keep dual 2g?
REPLY – keep your dual 2Gig and WAIT until things stabilize.
Will be working with HDCam, Digibeta and Betasp so I will still need analog input since I do not own A500.
REPLY – that is why I said to keep your I/O
1. Sell IO keep g5 2g and buy KONA LH PCIx
REPLY – no keep the I/O and the G5 2 Gig (look how much money I am saving you !)
2. Sell IO and buy KONA LH PCIe and G5 quad
REPLY – Dont sell the I/O, just buy the Kona 2
3. Keep IO keep g5 2g and buy KONA 2 PCIx
REPLY – YES this is the correct answer- you win the prize.
4. Keep IO keep g5 2g and buy KONA LH PCIx (seems to be most logical choice)
REPLY – buy the Knoa 2, see #3 above.
5. Keep IO and buy Black Magic HD/SDI card
REPLY – NO – when the Blackmagic Multibridge Studio comes out in 2011, we will all consider this product. Until then, keep the I/O, and buy the Kona 2
any other ideas?
REPLY – yes – stop asking so many questions – just spend $2000 on the Kona 2, and you are done. See – aren’t you glad you asked. This was a cheap weekend.
Is the quad worth the money and short lived life? Is it that mush faster? Will it run a (2) hour HD show better? will the intel G5s crush it?
REPLY – no one knows the answers to this question, except perhaps AJA and Apple. Is it short lived life? Of course – everything we own today is. This ain’t no Beta machine your’e buying anymore. Will the Intel crush it – no one
knows the answer to this question.
I need best possible solution. Money is not a concern.
REPLY – money is ALWAYS A CONCERN. If money is no concern, buy the Kona 2 today, have a great system, and when the Intel MAC comes out, throw it all out and buy the new stuff mid 2007.
I will be using the Promax SATA drives. The (2) terabyte boxes raided with the 8 interface cables.
REPLY – ProMax is a great company. If you are doing uncompressed HD, you might want to consider a Fibre channel solution.
My huge is only single channel and I understand ATTO has no card yet for the PCIe, The UL5D card is on the way I understand.
REPLY – YES THIS IS CORRECT, and there is no solid SATA card for the ProMax drives either (I don’t count the Highpoint a solid PCIe product yet). Who knows how the UL5D will perform. If you want to stay SCSI for uncompressed HD, the HUGE U320RX is a great solution for uncompressed HD.
Its a very confusing time. I need to deliver a (2) hour Discovery Channel show Jan 6th. Should start the up-res Dec 20th, so to need to decide asap.
REPLY – you have answered your own question – you DONT HAVE TIME TO SCREW AROUND. Buy the Kona 2, save your money, and when all this settles down, buy the new gear when it is stable (after all, you said money is no object).
After all of this discussion, you now walk away with a $2000 solution, get everything you want, and will be able to keep saving for when the Intel/MAC stuff comes out, which may require all new hardware. In the meantime, since money is no object, start considering purchasing a HD VTR.
