I shot an ad for a HP competition in my country(Iceland) this august and I would like some comments on it from all of you pros(and others).
We spent one day in studio and then about 1-2 weeks in post. I’m currently studying engineering so this was just a project on the side but I’m fairly happy about the result. I know the green screen is not the best, but due to lack of budget(the total cost of the ad was under $1000) we were forced to shoot on miniDV with Sony DSR-570. I will never ever shoot in gs with dv again.

The work in post was all done in After Effects, and I’m just looking for inputs on the technical side of the ad(The Afx work).

But anyhow, enough talking, here is the link(about 5mb):

nice. My first impression is that the audience and performers on stage are way too dark and lo contrast. I know they are supposed to be in a wash of light, but there should still be a lot more contrast me thinks. Same with the last guy, I’d bring up the levels a bit on him.

My overall thing is that it had more thought into the technical than the look or goal. I admired it as a nod to much bigger spots of the same technique (which probably had a LOT more people and money to work on it). But thought it could have used a bit more thought about color scheme, look, and flow. Seemed like there was a lot of dead black space for my tastes.

That being said for a cheap, quick project I give you a lot of kudos for a great entry.

Yes, thanks a lot for your comment and I must agree with you. But some of the “lack of contrast” comes because of my “lack of knowledge” of codecs. I’m using Sorenson 4.0 but I’m not getting it right I think. Like where the spotlights are on the stage, they get all noisy and grainy, it looks much better when it’s in best quality. I’ve tried a lot, those spotlights are made with Trapcode Lux, and I can’t seem to make them compress without getting grainy, and thus, making the overall picture bad.

But anyhow thanks for the comment, and I have to agree on you with the technical over concept. I would like more money next time I do something, $1000 run very short.

My 2 cents but if you can go back and fix the camera moves… they didnt seem that fluid… and if you were going for jerky they weren’t jerky enough. And now that you’ve finished it, why not go back and ad more people, graphic elements to it?
