Hey everyone, I’m looking at buying a new editing computer and I’m at a roadblock of indecision. I have a budget of about $2000 at the very most. I’d prefer to keep it between $1000-1500 though. I’m torn between these 3 options:

    1) 27″ iMac 2015 with an i7 processor (which would definitely be at the far end of my budget but is more affordable than a Mac Pro)

    2) Precision T5600 16 Gb+ Memory Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2667 0 @ 2.90GHz 2.90 GHz Graphics Card: NVIDIA Quadro 4000

    3) Building a new computer from scratch with these components (my friend helped me put this list together): Cooler Master Hyper 212X – CPU Cooler with Dual 120mm PWM Fan G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) Intel Z170 Platform / Intel X99 Platform Desktop Memory Model F4-3200C16D-16GVKB Intel Core i7-6700K 8M Skylake Quad-Core 4.0 GHz LGA 1151 91W BX80662I76700K Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 530 ASUS Z170-PRO LGA 1151 Intel Z170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard WD Blue M.2 1TB Internal SSD Solid State Drive – SATA 6Gb/s – WDS100T1B0B

Historically I’ve always preferred to edit on Final Cut, which can only (easily) be done on the iMac. However I’m not crazy about Final Cut X, and I’m comfortable editing with Premiere and Avid too and would be ok with making the switch if it meant a faster and more powerful machine.

Can anybody help me narrow this down?

i think option three is your best strategy. You’re going to get a lot more for your money and you’ll have the option to upgrade the system in the future.

the one thing I would alter is your motherboard. i think it’s worth it to get a mobo with thunderbolt 3.

    Adobe Premiere 2017.1
    Windows 10 Pro
    Samsung SSD 850 EVO system
Samsung SSD 850 EVO Adobe cache
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970
OWC Thunderbay 12t x 2 in Raid10 configuration (thru Storage Spaces and Disk Management)
