I’m working on this HUGE project at work in AE. It’s a big 5 part video piece. Well yesterday and again today if I work in AE for awhile or if I save my work I suddenly can no longer click on anything with a drop down menu. None of the menues at the top of the screen (so no file, edit, effect, layer) no animators for text. Nothing. Anybody have an idea what this could be. I think it might be a case where I need to trash the preferences file, but I don’t know where it is. Any and all help appreciated.

Sounds like the project you are working on may be too big for your computer to handle.
Since it is a five part piece, maybe you can make each part it’s own project. Then you can “remove unused footage” to slim things down.
Having these fives smaller projects instead of one big one may work. Just make sure you choose “File” then “remove unused footage”.

I tried breaking them into smaller projects, but it didn’t help. AE still freaks after every save. Anybody have any ideas?

I have had to reset my prefs before – ae would lose all the import dialogues and such and some menus wouldn’t work.

The pref folder should be at C:\Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Adobe\After Effects\Prefs\

should be a txt file named AEPrefs.txt

Move it out of there to your desktop and start AE again. See what happens.
