Need advice on JVC GR-DF450
Okay, this is not a broadcast camera, but I thought those that haunt this forum might have some info to share about it.
It’s the JVC GR-DF450, a consumer one-chip I’m getting for home movies, but it also has additional ports of use when I want to do some semi-pro work with it for YouTube or make your own commercial contests or whatever. This was the best compromise I could find in my search for the features I wanted in a camera under $300.What worries me about the potential purchase is that some reviewers say a few of these cameras have a serious problem in the optical block, basically the ccd falls off inside the block and the camera gives a “lens cap missing” warning. This model uses an external lens cap, lens caps have nothing to do with the problem, only the camera displays this when the breakdown happens. And when it happens, the camera can’t image anymore, it’s blind.
Now, the fault has been acknowledged by JVC for a list of certain models they agreed to give additional warranty support. But the JVC GR-DF450 is not on their list of the cams “recognized” as having the problem. So there’s a chance that in the unlucky event mine gets a detached retina, JVC might say “tough beans”. So I’m thinking I’ll pay $40 extra for a 3-year extended warranty from Beards ‘N Hats and roll the dice.
Anybody have some opinions, advice, observations on the Lens Cap failure issue? Any counsel on the JVC warranty service or the B&H aftermarket warranties?
